Writer/director Kenneth Branagh’s master class of filmmaking, Belfast rewards the viewer in many ways. Its sumptuous look and involving storyline play like a love letter to his youth but one with the reality of his surroundings at the core and they were hard times indeed. The period was known as “The Troubles”.

In its simplest terms, it was a conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years from the late sixties to the late nineties. The underlining cause was the factions in Northern Ireland that wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom and others that wanted to leave to the UK to form their own country.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The story is told through the eyes of nine-year-old Buddy (the transcendent newcomer Jude Hill) and his family who had to endure the violence and unrest during The Troubles before leaving Belfast to move to England. Their existence initially seems idyllic but cracks soon appear before all-out violence and rioting erupt.

Director of photography Haris Zambarloukos does an amazing job and he frames almost every shot with a hyper sense of realism that is very effective at drawing you in. While Branagh has the ability to elicit outstanding performances from his entire cast. This film will tug your heartstrings and entertain you in equal parts. It’s a must-see.

Thanks to Transmission Films we have five in-season tickets to giveaway to Six Minutes to Midnight!

In the summer of 1939, school teacher Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) takes a last minute role teaching English at the Augusta-Victoria College, Bexhill-on-Sea, a finishing school on the south coast of England. Despite the political storm clouds forming across Europe, daughters of influential families in Nazi Germany learn deportment, Shakespeare and how to be faithful members of Hitler’s League of German Girls.

Under the watchful eye of their headmistress Miss Rocholl (Dame Judi Dench), and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls practice their English and learn how to represent the ideal of German womanhood. With a new world war imminent and a fog of resentment surrounding their presence, youth’s summer is running out for the girls…and for everyone.

There is a common complaint among older moviegoers that the majority of releases today are tailored to a specific demographic and their group gets short shift. Attempting to fill that void is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It’s a British production and features a high power cast of outstanding sexagenarian thespians that includes Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson to name just a few.

It’s set in India and uses that colourful and frenetic local as an integral part of the storyline. It’s a tale of redemption amongst an older generation of Brits that are bucking against feeling like they have reached their used by dates. They end up at a hotel in India under false pretences and find that the luxury hotel the ads spoke about has been replaced by a run down complex run by Sonny (played with good humour by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire).

The set up is somewhat conventional but what really lets the movie down is how predictable the script is. This is not helped at all by an overbearing soundtrack that telegraphs almost every salient moment in the film. The actors try as they might have little to work with other that establishing their characters eccentricities.

Films with sophistication, complex characterization and involving plot lines will always have a place up on the big screen even if they appeal to only a certain segment of the audience but when you pander to a specific group you still need to involve them regardless of age or demographics.

Best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) suffers from terrible writer’s block and is struggling to finish his first screenplay.

His picture-perfect new wife Ruth is doing her best to keep him focussed so they can fulfil her dream of leaving London for Hollywood. Charles’ quest for inspiration leads him to invite the eccentric mystic Madame Acarti (Judi Dench) to perform a séance in his home.

He gets more than he bargained for when Madame Acarti inadvertently summons the spirit of his first wife: the brilliant and fiery Elvira. Ready to pick up her life right where she left off, Elvira is shocked to discover the prim and proper Ruth is now married to her husband and running her household.

Charles finds himself stuck between his two wives and their increasingly over-the-top attempts to outdo one another in this lethally hilarious comedy.

As popular culture continues with its tradition of circling back on itself, in the year 2019, we get a new film version of a musical that hit its zenith of popularity back in the eighties, Cats. This retro vibe is reflected in the overall feel and in many of the odd creative choices that are peppered throughout the film’s 110 minute running time.

Oddest choice of all is not utilising the current state of the art for cinema sound with its amazing ability for massive soundscapes. Instead we often get thin eighties sounding synth line based music. Also very few of the cast members have strong voices, with the exception of Jennifer Hudson who gets to belt out the thrice repeated hit, Memories.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Keeping things very stagy, most of the cast is adapt at the sinuous physicality and dance movements needed to ply the boards and bright lights. There is also a reliance on keeping the action of the large cast to a minimum number of sets. To highlight where the film’s main priorities lie is the casting of Francesca Hayward, a Royal Ballet Principal Ballerina as the female lead, Victoria. Her on-screen gracefulness is something to behold.

This generation’s film version of Cats is indeed an irregular one. From the bordering on creepy rendition of our fury friends to adhering to a simpler Broadway mentality with regards to staging and sound design. Where this fits in with current movie trends remains to be seen and the challenge will be for it to find a place in today’s multiplicitous society.
