Several things make the viewing of Civil War all the more chilling. Its matter-of-fact presentation and the reality of the current situation in the not-very United States of America add to the unease. As the power and money that runs that country becomes more and more centralised, it leaves an ever higher percentage of the population feeling disenfranchised and ready to latch onto almost anyone or anything that offers even a glimpse of change.

The film takes those real-world situations and lets them run to what some believe is a natural conclusion, Civil War. Through force, California and Texas have succeeded from the Union and become the dominant military power and have sent troops East to Washington DC to capture and execute the President. Into the fracas, we catch up with famous war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and Journalist Joel (Wagner Moura). The horrors Lee has witnessed are starting to catch up with her.

Their travels bring them into contact with budding photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and the developing story of the three gives the story its heart and soul. The presentation of war-torn America is shocking in its blandness and the unceremonious occupation by different factions of the battling military. There is not the usual presentation of a good side or a bad side and both sides are committing outrageous wartime atrocities.

As the self-proclaimed greatest country in the world seems to be teetering on the verge of demonstrative civil unrest and potential social collapse, the circumstances that make up Civil War seem less and less far-fetched. It’s this possible reality that gives the film such an uncomfortable edge. That it plays things straight and unvarnished only adds to the movie’s impact and appeal. This is buttressed by the believable human story at its core.

The film is currently screening at the Dendy Cinemas.

Thanks to Transmission Films we have five in-season tickets to giveaway to The Power of the Dog in cinemas from November 11!

Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as his hides.

The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly he drives them both to tears, reveling in their hurt and rousing his fellow cowhands to laughter – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose then returns to marry her.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his taunting of Rose takes an eerie form – he hovers at the edges of her vision, whistling a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheering of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace?

The Power of the Dog will be released in Australian cinemas November 11!

Very dark (literally and figuratively) and moody, writer/director Sofia Coppola’s take on Thomas P. Cullinan’s novel is an atmospheric treat, but it takes work. It’s shot so sparsely lit and with such a muted colour palette, it’s very hard to discern detail. The actor’s facial expressions are often times lost in this approach. At first it had cinema patrons asking if there was a technical issue with the projector. After the first reel, you just had to go with the flow.

The film is period correct and set during the later part of the American Civil War. It examines the effects of isolation and a group dynamic during a prolonged period of conflict. These circumstances guide the actions of both the innocent and the guilty. It offers this information with little opinion and you are left to follow your our path into the character’s actions.

The cast is filled with some heavy hitters. Colin Ferrel reprises the Clint Eastwood role from the seventies version and is cast perfectly as he is out numbered and ultimately out done by a house full of Southern Bells. Nicole Kidman does what she does best, gets the mix of aloofness and concern just right and Kirsten Dunst successfully follows her great work in season two of Fargo.

Things unfold in an unhurried and leisurely rate. Far from off-putting, this succeeds in drawing you in as does all the work you put in actually following what’s happening on screen. It is however, well worth the effort.

America needs inspiration now more than ever, so it’s easy to see why a film like Hidden Figures would be popular at the box office. It’s one of those true feel good films and it does an admirable job of building to its happy conclusion after subjecting the audience to the frustrations and absurdity of racism as it existed in sixties America.

The Space Race as it was called back then really was a race as the threat of communism and the fact the Russians had the early lead led to America green lighting an unheard of amount of money to something so esoteric. Many scientific advancements, ones with real commercial value came of the period, but back then it was more an ideal of pure politics. Regardless of the true government intension, the blend of science and human endeavour really did lift the masses.

Many people question the on going exploration of space and see the missions that led up to men landing on the moon as some quaint historical artefact but if there has been a time where mental motivation is needed, it is now. This period in history highlights how a government reaching for the stars can lift the aspirations of its people. Hard to see anything this inspirational coming out of Trump America in the next four years.
