Based on a true story, Father Stu is an unflinchingly honest, funny and ultimately uplifting drama about a lost soul who finds his purpose in a most unexpected place.

When an injury ends his amateur boxing career, Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) moves to L.A., dreaming of stardom. While scraping by as a supermarket clerk, he meets Carmen (Teresa Ruiz), a Catholic Sunday school teacher who seems immune to his bad-boy charm. Determined to win her over, the longtime agnostic starts going to church to impress her.

But surviving a terrible motorcycle accident leaves him wondering if he can use his second chance to help others find their way, leading to the surprising realization that he is meant to be a Catholic priest. Despite a devastating health crisis and the skepticism of Church officials and his divorced parents (Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver), Stu pursues his vocation with courage and compassion, inspiring not only those closest to him but countless others along the way.

Before viewing The Disaster Artist, it helps to know a little bit about a film called The Room. That film consistently rates highly (or lowly) in film geek’s lists of worst movies ever made. It is a riot of bad acting, scattered dialogue and strange plots points that arrive and then disappear, never to be seen again. It has become a cult classic and features prominently on many indie cinemas midnight screening schedule.

Now using one of the most unintentionally funny films of all time as fodder for a film about a film has yielded comic gold. James Franco nails the role of The Room’s creator Tommy Wiseau (minus the middle age creepiness) and has never been more fearless or funny. It’s also a family affair and features his brother Dave as a co-lead actor.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

// ]]>
// ]]>

// ]]>
// ]]>

The Room was beyond bad and feels as if it was alien in origin while The Disaster Artist feels Hollywood through and through. From its star laden cameos to the Franco brothers act, they both originated from different worlds but both generate huge laughs. The film also never devolves into snide commentary and treats Tommy Wiseau fairly.

Don’t worry if you are yet to see The Room as at film’s end there are some side by side scene comparison that put the current crazy in context to the fractured past. The Disaster Artist is a blast and should not be missed.

What does it take to scare a modern audience? Is it even possible to provide enough jolts to the system to get the job done. The Grudge takes an interesting but simple premise and attempts to ramp up the scare tactics enough to get through to a group of horror film aficionados that have been oversaturated by stimuli.

The film shares a storyline with the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge and the 2004 America remake of the same name. At its most basic, it’s based on a house that becomes attached to and haunts all those that enter it. This time there are individuals whose connection only become apparent as things progress.

Not short of star power, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Jacki Weaver are just a few of the actors involved. Andrea Riseborough plays the lead character Detective Muldoon and she tries hard to hit most of the right notes to build the terror. The movie’s structure limits what she can do.

Building a scary experience on things jumping out of the darkness at you and drilling your ears with crescendo after crescendo of eerie sound design only takes you so far. After that there is a need for the story telling to buttress those feeling of unease. The Grudge succeeds at establishing an unsettling feeling but falls short of delivering the big scare.

Diane Keaton returns to her comic roots in this bittersweet comedy by documentary film maker Zara Hayes. She is joined by a strong cast that includes Pam Grier, Rhea Perlman and the film’s MVP Jacki Weaver.

Keaton plays Martha, an elderly woman who leaves her life long New York apartment to move into a retirement community in Arizona. All she wants to do is be left alone but that never happens, thanks to her vivacious next door neighbour Sheryl, played by the delightful Jacki Weaver.

Weaver is fantastic as the forever young woman next door who just wont take no for an answer. Martha missed her chance to become a cheerleader in her youth by having to take care of her drying mother and soon recruits Sheryl and a crazy mix of fellow retirees to become a cheerleading squad.

The film has a big heart and even though a lot of the jokes are predictable, this does little to diminish the joy inherent in the story. It’s sad ending features a redemptive close that makes the point of living every day to its fullest while giving its audience something to smile about.
