Nicholas and Isabel are made for each other, but fate does not always choose the easiest path to true love.

As destiny pulls them together, so do family, passion, and faith drive them apart. Nicholas’ father, William, comes home one day to shatter his family’s quiet, modest life.

He tells them that after a moment of divine revelation, he has decided to dedicate his life to painting. He quits his job and sets off for the Western coast, leaving his shell shocked wife and son to fend for themselves.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Watching two of the finest actors currently working in film riffing off each other is fascinating and the script by David Seidler gives them both the ammunition to really ignite the story line. There are so many moments of real humour and real pathos and none of them feel like cheap manipulations. The film drew in all members of the audience.

If the trend towards mainstream films being aimed at progressively younger audience members leaves most adult viewers out in the cold, the powers to be should drop into a local Cineplex and see the full seats of an all ages audience enjoying this gem. Might make them re-evaluate that unfortunate trend.

Dendy Coorparoo and Dendy Portside will be hosting screenings of FIGHT CLUB (PARK CIRCUS) for its 20th Anniversary!

Fight Club is a 1999 film based on the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk. It was directed by David Fincher and stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. Norton plays the unnamed narrator, who is discontent with his white-collar job. He forms a “fight club” with soap salesman Tyler Durden (Pitt), and becomes embroiled in a relationship with him and a destitute woman, Marla Singer (Bonham Carter).

Palahniuk’s novel was optioned by 20th Century Fox producer Laura Ziskin, who hired Jim Uhls to write the film adaptation. Fincher was selected because of his enthusiasm for the story. He developed the script with Uhls and sought screenwriting advice from the cast and others in the film industry. He and the cast compared the film to Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and The Graduate (1967), with a theme of conflict between Generation X and the value system of advertising. Fincher used the homoerotic overtones of Palahniuk’s novel to make audiences uncomfortable and keep them from anticipating the twist ending.

Studio executives did not like the film and restructured Fincher’s marketing campaign to try to reduce anticipated losses. Fight Club failed to meet the studio’s expectations at the box office and received polarized reviews, becoming one of the most controversial and talked-about films of the year. Critics praised the acting, directing, and themes, but debated the violence and moral ambiguity. Over time, however, critical and public reception towards the film has become largely positive, and the film found success with its DVD release, which established Fight Club as a cult film.

First admission, I love caper flicks, second I love to see intelligent women up on the big screen, so going to see Ocean’s 8, I had high hopes. So it’s very encouraging to say that the experience was very satisfying. It’s more than just a remake of the Ocean’s franchise with women playing the key roles.

It has its own feel and its own pacing and in a few key moments, it has clever ties with the films that have come before. Also like a good caper, there is that substantial twist at the end that few, it any will have seen coming.

While new director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games & Pleasantville) has his own kinetic feel, the influence of Steven Soderbergh (who serves as one of the film’s producers) continues to be strongly felt. The examples of fashion are quirky and gorgeous to look at and the music is hip and propulsive.

Ocean’s 8 does more than just celebrate the current (and much needed) emergence of women to the power end of the process. It substantiates through modern day optics and some very clever cameos of past legends, that women had and continue to have the ability to satisfy audiences and still make bank.

Cinderella is so ‘Disney’ it almost hurts. (Cinder)Ella is so wholesome as to be almost beyond belief.

Her step-mother and sisters are evil beyond redemption and the prince is handsome and honourable beyond reproach. None of this is unexpected, of course – Disney is as Disney does and it’s perfect little girl fodder, complete with doe-eyed innocence and glittery flouncy dresses. And it’s all shot with an impossible beauty that can only be achieved on a perfectly lit studio set.

Nothing is a surprise – the goodies get their fairy tale ending and the baddies get their just desserts. It’s just all so very… ‘nice’. Without being remarkable in any way, it pushes all the right buttons and duly hits all the appropriate marks. No one will go home disappointed but neither will anyone go home completely wowed.

The standalone pinnacle of the film is Helena Bonham Carter’s scene-stealing turn as the Fairy Godmother which is just fabulous in every way. The rest of the cast, which includes Cate Blanchett and Stellan Skarsgård, play strictly by the numbers – again, not disappointing just unremarkable.

Cinderella is completely harmless holiday fare that, at the very least, will be a welcome relief from the endless re-watches of my young one’s Barbie DVDs at home.
