Michael B. Jordan does double duty, playing twin brothers in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The two have grown up on the mean streets of the Deep South and during the early thirties, those were mean streets indeed for people of colour. They are flush with cash from a shady deal and hit town to set up a juke joint that caters to the local cotton-picking population.

They tap into their friend’s system and pull people from the local town to help with the various jobs to get the joint off the ground. There is a real sense of camaraderie among the crew but there is also no doubt the twins are fully in charge. They also enlist the help of Sammie (Miles Caton) the son of a preacher man who plays a mean blues guitar.

The film is shot with atmospherics at the forefront and the colours are warm and saturated. Music plays an important part as well and it is earthy and authentic. There is also a surrealistic edge to it and this includes a few jarring moments where the time frame seems to be very elastic. It plays fast and loose with the real world.

Once the opening night of the juke joint is underway the film transforms into a mix of social commentary and horror-driven peril. This includes the supernatural and legions of the undead. At times the film loses focus and the actor’s dialogue is a bit hard to understand. This leads to a feeling that the work is not completely hitting the mark but miraculously there is a coda that runs during the credits that does a great job of pulling it all together.

With its complex narrative and wildly imaginative approach towards animation, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proves you don’t have to dumb things down to have popular appeal. It’s an approach that resonates with a large and vocally appreciative audience.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) proves it is still tough being a young Spider-Man and balancing high school, girls and keeping the parental units unaware of your superhero antics. He’s also enduring the absence of gal pal Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). When Gwen returns and seeks his help on a mission, it turns his life inside out.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The look of the film is unlike any other and uses a plethora of animation techniques and a robust palette of colours to dazzle the eye. It’s not just the visual presentation that is arresting, there are so many fresh ideas for the expansion of its characters. This is buttressed by a unique look by the animators and the approach of the voice actors.

The expansion of the multi-verse is impressive and requires some past knowledge of the first chapter in the saga, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Viewing that first film before seeing the new edition is an advantage in understanding the nuances. Even without prior knowledge, it is still a bold and inventive work that rewards those that can keep up.

Regardless if you see the film as a prequel or a reboot, Bumblebee brings new life to a very tired franchise. Recasting it as a coming of age story and bringing new actors onboard also help things substantially. The movie lightens up and the lack of seriousness is a welcome change.

There are a number of other elements that help transform the film as well, the most important being the non-objectification of the female characters. The Megan Fox syndrome is completely avoided and new girl, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) gets the balance between awkward teenager and emerging woman just right. The script also helps with this as it avoids a number of predictable cliches.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Setting the film in the late eighties provides the opportunity to dial back the current overblown American military presence and alpha male tendencies. The main military man, John Cena as Agent Burns is played mostly for comic effect. His character is also the most poorly written.

The film is fun and entertaining in a very family friendly way and it’s one that is much more accessible for the young ladies in the house. It’s lack of sexist rhetoric is refreshing as is it’s less strident tone.

For those that question if Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is just another unnecessary reinvention of the Spider-man storyline, fear not. This computer generated version is a significant and completely relevant addition. It also expands the Spider-man universe.

During one of King-Pin’s criminal endeavours, he opens a portal so more than one version of Spidey can exist in the same space as well as leaving room to create a brand new web-slinger. Enter Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as a young man finding his way in life who becomes the newest Web-head.

The filmmakers have used the CGI medium to its fullest and the look is fantastic with colours so bright they rival any animated film before it (even Yellow Submarine). The use of graffiti art, tagging and even slap art gives things a successful urban feel as does the soundtrack that features tunes from Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla Sign, Blackway and Black Caviar and others.

This is a rare film in that trying to put its effervesce and visual appeal into words is near impossible. You need to see it up on the big screen and get lost in its overwhelming look and solid message.
