Blending myth and magic, The Northman makes it plain that it’s not always easy being royalty. Prince Amleth (played by Oscar Novak as a youth and Alexander Skarsgård as an adult) sees his father King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke) slayed by his uncle and has to flee his native home.

Fast forward a number of years and the ensuing time has not been kind to the adult Prince. His body shows the hard life of a marauding warrior and his mind is still crowded with thoughts of revenge. Even meeting a hot blonde, Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy) does little to mellow out his ways.

He discovers the location of his uncle, Fjölnir the Brotherless (Claes Bang) and continues his unwavering direction of vengeance. This time taking Olga along for the ride. It’s all epic alpha male posturing and the women including Nicole Kidman as mother Queen Gudrún are given minor roles.

Beautiful but dimly lit throughout and often times spoken in native tongues (with subtitles) it takes substantial effort on your part to remain engaged. The magic elements lead to a number of striking scenes and this raises the visual experience. It’s a film best seen on the biggest and brightest screen you can find and rewards those with a taste for a good revenge yarn.

For those that find even the UFC doesn’t raise the pulse enough, that the fisticuffs just aren’t big enough, there is always Godzilla vs. Kong. How can you go wrong with combatants the size of buildings, very large buildings and just to make things even more interesting, one has a super mean right hook and the other laser breath.

Following Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, this latest edition in Legendary’s MonsterVerse pits the two biggest box office titans against each other while the fate of the world hangs in the balance. The final battlefield this time takes place in Hong Kong and the city comes off very second best. The level of destruction is impressive.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The filmmakers have relied on the spectacle of the fight scenes to carry the movie as the story makes little sense and the human cast members are unable to contribute much as they are given little to do. The production team also hides a lot of the details in murky conditions with low lighting and air filled with debris. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if this was a cost-cutting or stylistic choice as scaling back on some of the CGI detail must certainly have saved some money.

Ultimately what you are left with is fifteen rounds plus of two famous monsters kicking the crap out of each other while the puny humans do their best to stay relevant. There is even a technological ringer thrown in the mix at the eleventh hour to help bring home a message of why can’t we just all just get along. See it for the carnage but expect little else.

This fish out of water rom-com delivers quite a high level of satisfaction. It’s two leads Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, riff off each other well and the script gives them plenty of ammunition to do so. Director Jonathan Levine (Snatched and Warm Bodies) keeps things lively with very few flat spots.

Theron is Charlotte Field, the residing Secretary of State to sitting President Chambers (the under utilised Bob Odenkirk). She is a power player who is taking a run at the presidency after Chambers says he is not running for a second term. Rogen is Fred Flarsky, a recently unemployed fire brand journalist who has a better sense of morals than he does a dress sense.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Flarsky has always held a candle for Field dating back to a time in his youth when she was his babysitter. Through circumstances that could only exist in the world of cinema, their paths cross at a party. She soon hires him to help soften her image by helping with her speeches. The long dormant flame sparks up and they soon become an item.

The majority of the comedy comes from the fish out of water angle, he’s a slob and she, the razor sharp politician but the jokes are well written and both topical and current with today’s popular culture. They more often than not hit their mark. Add an ending that is as outlandish as the close of Pretty Woman and you have quite an enjoying film on your hands.

The years right after the end of World War II in Europe were tumultuous times. With millions of people displaced and cities left in smoking ruins, it was a very bleak period. After celebrations by the victors diminished, there was a harsh reality left behind.

Setting The Aftermath in this time frame colours the story to a degree but it under-utilises the emotional turmoil of the time to tell a somewhat conventional love story. It is set in the dead of winter and the stark white of the snow underlines the coldness between its main players.

Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) is reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a high commander and part of the occupational forces in Germany. Their relationship is one of dysfunction and distance. There was a family tragedy that permanently changed their lives and the distance between them is great.

When the handsome German, Stephen Lubert (Alexander Skarsgård) is forced to give his house over to the couple, the pieces are in place for a love triangle. Sadly the film does little with this premise. You get to see Knightley emote and transition from a cold person who lacks empathy to feeling again and Clarke gets to have his own personal journey but Skarsgård is given little to do. There are some moments of interest but few lasting ones.

Thanks to StudioCanal we have five double-pass to give away to Long Shot!

Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) is one of the most influential women in the world. Smart, sophisticated, and accomplished, she’s a powerhouse diplomat with a talent for…well, mostly everything. Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is a gifted and free spirited journalist with a self-destructive streak. The two have nothing in common, except that she was his baby sitter and first crush. When Fred unexpectedly reunites with Charlotte, he charms her with his self-deprecating humour and his memories of her youthful idealism. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte impulsively hires Fred as her speechwriter, much to the dismay of her trusted advisors.

A fish out of water on Charlotte’s elite team, Fred is unprepared for her glamourous and high stakes lifestyle. However, sparks fly as their unmistakable chemistry leads to a round-the-world romance that becomes embroiled in a series of dangerous and outlandish incidents.

Long Shot stars Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Andy Serkis, June Diane Raphael, with Bob Odenkirk, and Alexander Skarsgård, and is in Australian cinemas May 2!

Following the global success of 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” and in the lead-up to the 2019 release of the highly anticipated “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Entertainment’s cinematic Monsterverse: “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Production has commenced at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, the epic action adventure will pit two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against one another – the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong – with humanity caught in the balance.

“We’re thrilled to be back on the Gold Coast with our next Monsterverse adventure,” said producer and Legendary’s EVP of Creative Affairs Alex Garcia. “We had a wonderful experience here on ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ and the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland has been a terrific resource in helping us leverage the region’s stunning landscapes, exceptional facilities and fantastic crews to achieve the scope we need for this epic next chapter in the saga.”

“Godzilla vs. Kong” is the first major motion picture to be shot in Australia following the Federal Government’s announcement of its AUD$140 million Location Incentive program, designed to lure international productions down under. Throughout the film’s 26-week shoot on the Gold Coast, the production is expected to inject substantial revenues into the state economy, creating an estimated 300 jobs and boosting small business across the region.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” is being directed by Adam Wingard (“The Guest,” “You’re Next”). The film stars Alexander Skarsgård (“Big Little Lies,” The Little Drummer Girl”), Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”), Rebecca Hall (“Christine,” “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta,” “Widows”), Shun Oguri (“Gintama”), Eiza González (“Baby Driver”), Jessica Henwick (“Iron Fist”), Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”), with Kyle Chandler (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”) and Demián Bichir (“The Nun,” “The Hateful Eight”).

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

Wingard directs from a script written by Terry Rossio (“Pirates of the Caribbean”). The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, Brian Rogers, Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, with Kenji Okuhira and Yoshimitsu Banno serving as executive producers. Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy and Tamara Kent are co-producers.

Behind the scenes, Wingard’s creative team includes director of photography Ben Seresin (“World War Z,” “Unstoppable”), production designers Owen Patterson (“Godzilla,” “The Matrix” Trilogy and “Captain America: Civil War”) and Tom Hammock (“The Guest,” “Blindspotting”), editor Josh Schaeffer (“Molly’s Game,” “Kong: Skull Island”), costume designer Ann Foley (“Altered Carbon”), and VFX supervisor John “DJ” DesJardin (“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Watchmen”).

Filming is taking place in Hawaii and Australia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, “Godzilla vs. Kong” is currently scheduled for release on May 21, 2020 in Australia and New Zealand. The film will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theatres by Warner Bros. Pictures, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. The film will be distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Roadshow Films.

The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with Kenji Okuhira, Yoshimitsu Banno, Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers. Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy and Tamara Kent are co-producers.

Behind the scenes, Wingard’s creative team includes director of photography Ben Seresin (“World War Z,” “Unstoppable”), production designers Owen Patterson (“Godzilla,” “The Matrix” Trilogy and “Captain America: Civil War”) and Tom Hammock (“The Guest,” “Blindspotting”), editor Josh Schaeffer (“Molly’s Game,” “Kong: Skull Island”), costume designer Ann Foley (“Altered Carbon”), and VFX supervisor John “DJ” DesJardin (“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Watchmen”).
