Fast forward a number of years and the ensuing time has not been kind to the adult Prince. His body shows the hard life of a marauding warrior and his mind is still crowded with thoughts of revenge. Even meeting a hot blonde, Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy) does little to mellow out his ways.

He discovers the location of his uncle, Fjölnir the Brotherless (Claes Bang) and continues his unwavering direction of vengeance. This time taking Olga along for the ride. It’s all epic alpha male posturing and the women including Nicole Kidman as mother Queen Gudrún are given minor roles.

Beautiful but dimly lit throughout and often times spoken in native tongues (with subtitles) it takes substantial effort on your part to remain engaged. The magic elements lead to a number of striking scenes and this raises the visual experience. It’s a film best seen on the biggest and brightest screen you can find and rewards those with a taste for a good revenge yarn.

Van Meegeren profited greatly from selling Johannes Vermeer paintings to high-ranking German officials during the war. After hostilities ended he was charged with selling Dutch cultural property to the Nazis and faced a possible death sentence. During the trial, he used the defense that he actually forged the paintings and thus was able to avoid capital punishment.

Starting as an investigative yarn, the film features Danish actor Claes Bang playing Captain Joseph Piller, who is tasked with ferreting out war profiteers and collaborators in Holland. The film switches gear midway through and turns into a courtroom drama and gives Pearce the chance to preen with abandon. Van Meegeren is now considered to be one of history’s greatest forgers.

The film takes great artist license (pun intended) with the actual story and Van Meegeren’s life is even more interesting than the one presented on screen. Although his forgery defense was successful at avoiding the firing squad he was still convicted of falsification and fraud charges but died of a heart attack before he had to serve his one-year sentence. In all, he duped buyers out of the equivalent of almost a quarter of a billion dollars in today’s money.

Despite mounting evidence, Piller becomes increasingly convinced of Han’s innocence and finds himself in the unlikely position of fighting to save the life of the colourful man with a mysterious past. The film also features Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread).

Claes Bang (TV’s Dracula) is James Figueras, a failed artist who now earns a crust by lecturing tourists about some of the world’s great art pieces. When he is hired by super art dealer, Joseph Cassidy, played with an elegant level of amorality by Mick Jagger to steal a painting for him, Figueras sees his entry into those rarified waters.

Along the way, his path crosses with Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), a small-town girl trying to feel alive by a visit to the wild side. She gets pulled into his sphere and also helps him unlock a relationship with Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland) a world-famous and reclusive painter, who is Figueras and Cassidy’s intended target for the art theft.

Ultimately Figueras is ill-prepared for the consequences of his actions and his slow disintegration at film’s end is a highlight and leaves much open to the audience. Contrasting vainglorious speech with gritty human behaviours gives The Burnt Orange Heresy a multidimensional look at a rarified world filled with more villains than heroes.
