In the current times when the AI influence in the visual arts has never been more prevalent, the old adage “seeing is believing” has never had less relevance. Amid this, round three of the Now You See Me franchise has hit our screens. The Horsemen have returned this time, and with a few new members. Their nemesis comes from the shady world of diamond cartels. 

The opposition is led by Veronika Vanderberg, a South African who runs a diamond company started by her late Nazi father. Their profits now come from laundering money for the criminal elites. She is played with an evil glee by Rosamund Pike. When she gets ready to auction the world’s largest diamond, the group springs into action.

Having broken up over ten years ago after their last big caper, the Four Horsemen are spurred back into action by the individual receipt of a mysterious tarot card. The three newbies arrive via a deep fake show featuring the artificial likenesses of the original four. They are soon integrated into the team and now have a common cause.

As is the case with all the Now You See Me films, you can never believe what transpires on screen until the final reveal, and this approach is fun for all the armchair detectives out there. Your ability to read between the lines and second-guess the actions of all of the cast members will reinforce your fun. Some motives you will see, many you won’t.

Kelly Jones (Johansson) is a marketing and promotional genius from the Big Apple who plays fast and loose with the truth and is perfect for the job. After the tragic loss of the three astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee in a fire that happened during a training exercise, the race to the moon is lagging in popularity and it is Jones who is coerced into helping with lifting those sagging numbers.

She runs headlong in the the conservative ways of Launch Director Davis and most of the fireworks come from their emerging relationship. Watching these two movie stars riff off each other while being driven by a script that gives them plenty of ammunition is a joy to behold. As things progress you discover they both are harbouring events from their past that they need to overcome on their way to being happy.

When government man Berkus comes up with the crackpot idea of filming a fake version of the moon landing in case the actual one goes astray, it provides the circumstance for that moment of truth between the two main protagonists. For a space geek like myself, watching this generation’s version of His Girl Friday (the 1940 Howard Hawks screwball comedy) set during the race to the moon pays extra dividends. It’s also great to see the continuation of strong scripts written where women are the ones who get to swoop in and save the day.

When one of the Farrelly Brothers became attached to the project (this time brother Bobby) it didn’t bode well to match the charm of the original film. But the results are somewhat surprising. Champions is a more warm-hearted character study and less the expected ribald comedy.

Woody Harrelson is Marcus, a basketball coach who runs afoul of the law and is given a community service sentence to coach a group of individuals with intellectual disabilities. His narcissistic ways initially clash with the free-spirited players but they soon win him over and life lessons are learned.

It’s this humanising of these players that give the work its biggest appeal. The more you learn about them, the more they overcome all the stigmas and you end up relating to them as just people. Harrelson and love interest Alex played by Kaitlin Olson from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia put in workman-like performances but pale in comparison to the rest of the cast. They are the beating heart of the film.

Picking up where the first chapter left off, Venom: Let There Be Carnage highlights the difficulty of experiencing life with a foreign body fighting for control for your body and mind. The forced partnership is played mostly for laughs as this modern day odd couple get drawn into the twisted world of serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson).

Harrelson has not been this over the top since playing Mickey Knox in Natural Born Killers. His partner in crime Frances Barrison, is played by the almost unrecognisable Naomie Harris. Through circumstance Kasady gets to host an alien of his own and this leads to a titanic battle between well, almost every cast member.

This major skirmish exists almost completely in the world of computer generated imagery and some of the visual effects are quite impressive and more than a little repulsive. It’s a good thing the visuals are so striking as there is an almost complete absence of story and plot line. This film exists solely for the thrill of the battle and the humour of the leads. Laughs and a kick ass battle rule the day.
