The story is completely bonkers as it involves stitching a dog’s head to a human cop’s body to create a super cop. The only problem is they forgot to inform the budding Doctor Frankenstein of the particulars and the title character can only communicate via barking.

If the dog is the good guy, you have to know the baddie will be a cat and in this case, it’s Petey voiced by Pete Davidson. This malevolent feline is a perfect fit for the slacker ethic that Davidson does so well. It makes for an arch enemy that resides more in the comic vein than the outright evil category.

With its individual look and irreverence towards the stock standard ethos of “If it’s got animated animals it must be super cute and cuddly”, Dog Man impresses with an identity that is far from typical for films of this genre. There is much to enjoy for kids of all ages.

“I played softball growing up,” said Carrie Hobson, who wrote, directed and executive produced the series with Michael Yates. “Inspired by that experience, we felt fast-pitch softball was the perfect backdrop for the show. There are so many facets to playing sports that I love—it can bring out the best and worst of a person, the calmest person can lose their temper. According to Yates, the idea of spotlighting different perspectives was born of everyday life at Pixar. “Carrie and I were officemates on ‘Toy Story 4,’” he said. “We were both story artists on the film, and we would talk about a lot of things going on in the film, as well as things going on in the world—current events, news. We would always have different reactions or different interpretations of the same meeting. One of us would say, ‘That went great!’ and the other would say, ‘No! It was terrible, what are you talking about?’ We realised that our own experiences that we bring to the table change our perception of an event. We wanted to tell a story that illustrated all of that.”

With PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, the adult content subtle or not is completely stripped away. This is a film that can comfortably be shown to young people of all ages. It was just my good fortune to experience it with my favourite little person in the entire world Eva.

She was enthralled throughout its ninety-two-minute running time. The human characteristics given to those cute canines made it easy for her to relate to all cast members and even helped her pick out a favourite one. Which she rooted for throughout the screening. The action was exciting but non-threatening.

Reflected through the eyes of a five-and-a-half-year-old, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie comes up a winner. It’s successful mix of visual spectacle and easy story telling make for a great time and one that will keep the little ones involved from start to finish.
