Into this ever-expanding category comes Gareth Edwards’ The Creator. His directorial work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla shows he has game in this medium and this is his boldest statement yet. He uses cutting-edge effects to full advantage and tackles a topic that is at the forefront of human thinking at the moment.

On the surface, the story tells of a time in the future when AI or artificial intelligence has become a species of its own and is in competition with humans for control of the planet. Sub-texturally it touches on subjects as wide-ranging as American Imperialism, the emergence of Asian culture as the dominant one and the simple love that can exist between a father and his child.

There are big ideas afloat and the concepts are complex ones but they are grounded in a story as old as man himself, where is our place in the cosmos and does the power of love transcend and even bridge the gap between man and machine. The Creator provides an epic journey well worth taking.

This actual event, the Wall Street Putsch of 1933 as it was known was an attempt by a group of rich industrialists to overthrow the then government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install a dictator of their choosing. That event informs the events of Amsterdam but in a roundabout way.

The main cast of characters are made up of a trio brought together by World War I. Doctor Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) the evening’s narrator and the soul of the proceedings, his war mate Harold Woodman (John David Washington) and Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie) as the nurse that took care of them after they were injured.

The story is delivered with a nod and wink at most times and is more amusing that laugh outlaid funny. It also unfortunately mirrors current world events at the moment a little too much, although the world leaders of today are nowhere near as entertaining. Capturing the period with impeccable set designs and costumes, this is another worthy addition to O Russell’s ever-expanding collection of great yearns.

It has to do with a kind of time travel, the much is clear from the trailers but how it plays out is quite unexpected. It is largely impenetrable at first and much of the dialogue needs to be almost sensed as there are artistic discretions taken with sound production. The screenplay also lacks the character-driven influence of Nolan’s brother, Jonathan.

The main protagonist is played by John David Washington, of BlacKkKlansman fame and he has a lot to do. His is in almost every scene but his understated cool and intelligence help him pull it off. He does have strong competition however from Kenneth Branagh as the vile and over the top bad guy, Andrei Sator.

For those hoping that Tenet will be the great tentpole film to get audience members to return to the cinema in droves, it might be a bit too dense for that. It is however a great communal experience and everyone seems to have a different take on it. It is also sure to generate countless lively discussions afterwards.

He uses language and profanity with savage intent and it brings the viewer to the very edge of comfort and often times over it. His message is also so heavy, that without the humour and human connection of some of the characters, it would overpower. As it is, it burns its way into your memory cells.

The story of a black police detective that is invited to join the Ku Klux Klan is based on the autobiographical book Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth and its truths are so outrageous, that it reads like it could only be a wild flight of fancy from an over caffeinated Hollywood writer. That it is true, only adds to its impact.

Spike does entertain you throughout BlacKkKlansman but finishes the film with live footage that not only overwhelms you but also saddens with the realisation of how little progress we humans have made in the last few decades. It’s a full frontal assault on the Cheetos Jesus and his base appeal and it pulls no punches.
