Jennifer Lawrence plays Maddie Barker, one of the few permanent residents in Montauk, New York. The town is a destination for New Yorkers with money to while away the idyllic summer months by the water while the locals tend to their every need.

Maddie, on the cusp of losing the house her late mother left her due to back taxes answers an ad to seduce the lonely child of a rich couple played by Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti. This predictable premise (for a rom-com) is easily overlooked by what happens after the plan is put into play.

As the couple get to know each other you evolve in your assessment of said lonely lad Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman). He goes from being an easy-to-dismiss geek into an adult with substantial value and several hidden talents. The transformation of both Percy and Maddie gives the film a depth and value not seen that often in the rom-com genre.

The always-outstanding British actor Christian Bale lays to rest the man in black for the new man in fat. His visual transformation is just one element of his transcendent performance. He has to act his butt off just to transcend that hairdo of his. Jennifer Lawrence adds to her building resume of great performances as Bale’s on screen wife who is both hilarious and clueless.
Bradley Cooper’s manic drug fuelled performance is also outstanding. Now no discussion of great roles in this film would be complete without discussing the part the wardrobe plays in this film. The seventies hair and fashion defies gravity and the specter of soft-core porn with some wicked comb overs, hair curlers and well placed double sided adhesive tape.

Thankfully the saying ‘if you remember the seventies, you weren’t actually alive in the seventies’ is proven untrue as both the director and actors get the nuances just right. See this film for the humour and spectacle, remember it for the human pathos and misguided sense of right and wrong.

We also see Sophie Turner, she of Game Of Thrones fame, take on the role of Jean Grey who becomes Phoenix. We first meet Jean as a little girl who has no real clue about the extent of her mutant powers. When she discovers their true power, it leads to a traumatic and tragic event that becomes a life changing event.

The origin side of the story takes its time to develop but in the film’s last reel, the crazy ramps up to considerable heights. There is a battle between an alien life force and almost the entire roster of X-Men and it is spectacular. Each of the X-Men’s powers are tested to the fullest and often times they come up short.

The underlining theme of this film as with many others in the franchise is the importance of family and not necessarily the one you are born with. It’s a valid inclusion The film in parts is amazing to look at but feels more like a charter of a bigger storyline than a self standing movie. Time will tell where the X-Men franchise goes from here.

Jennifer Lawrence delivers her bravest performance yet and adds another outstanding job to her ever expanding resume of excellence. As an actor, she endures almost as much pain and shows as much commitment as her character does on screen.

The film slowly builds and builds, so viewers looking for that quick visceral thrill might have to look elsewhere but for those that revel in playing arm chair detective themselves, will find much to love as the clues unfold. When the final reveal comes it makes you reassess all that has come before.

Red Sparrow harkens back to a time when you could challenge an audience’s intelligence and detective skills before attention spans recessed and action became the dominant form for spy movies. All this psychological action and not a martini, shaken or stirred in sight.
