Who says Hollywood dreams can’t come true for a blonde with the initials MM? In this third instalment of writer/director Ti West’s X series of movies, Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) proves herself more than up to the task of dealing with anything that tinsel town can throw at her. It’s a joy to see her taking care of business.

Cornered in a dark alley by a knife-wielding thug? It is nothing that the gun in her handbag and the stiletto heels to his testicles can’t take care of. Tackling a difficult and highly emotional reading for a film part, nailed it! Even freeing Los Angeles from the grip of fear caused by a certain serial killer? It’s all in a day’s work.

Made to complement the other editions in the trilogy, it is not a necessity to have seen the others but for those in the know, this story takes place after the events in X. It straddles the line between horror and comedy with a deft touch and has a smarmy charm all of its own.

With an enjoyable old-school look and feel to the film and its mid-eighties-centric parade of clothes fashion and hair, it all ends up looking so fun and funky. It’s also great to see a female protagonist who can be strong without resorting to the usual gender based stereotypes. Maxine is a total badass and boy does she know it.

What started as an outlier in the Marvel Comics Universe and then became fully integrated into said world with its characters shared across almost all the company’s projects finally comes to an end. Your level of satisfaction with this last chapter will be in line with your acceptance of the basic structure of almost all Marvel projects.

Volume 3 of Guardians of the Galaxy shares the franchise’s penchant for fantastic visuals highlighting imaginative new worlds with recognisable rock songs to help create momentum. It also features characters that are written well within the lines. This gives things a comforting familiarity but one open for a slight expansion of backstory. This time the highlights are the details about Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) origin story.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

He soon falls in with a bad crowd and gets roped into a heist at a Framer’s Market. He involves the rest of the animals from the farm and they stage quite the caper. It is an elaborately staged plan and plays out like a heist film where you root for the bad (good) guys. Things soon go astray and Peter is left with a life lesson and has to work at restoring his family.

Although at times the films veers into somewhat corny circumstances, it does so with such a pure heart, it is easy to forgive. The children’s laughter in the room also makes you realise you need to keep your mind in a childlike mode. The animation is quite seamless and this also helps to sell the story. See it with the little ones you love and they will love it too.

In regards to all the secrecy involved around revealing the plot behind Christopher Nolan’s new film Tenet, those power brokers shouldn’t have worried quite so much. It is near impossible to easily state the storyline that powers this high concept film through its myriad of different directions. Even with 280 characters, it’s a futile task.

It has to do with a kind of time travel, the much is clear from the trailers but how it plays out is quite unexpected. It is largely impenetrable at first and much of the dialogue needs to be almost sensed as there are artistic discretions taken with sound production. The screenplay also lacks the character-driven influence of Nolan’s brother, Jonathan.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The main protagonist is played by John David Washington, of BlacKkKlansman fame and he has a lot to do. His is in almost every scene but his understated cool and intelligence help him pull it off. He does have strong competition however from Kenneth Branagh as the vile and over the top bad guy, Andrei Sator.

For those hoping that Tenet will be the great tentpole film to get audience members to return to the cinema in droves, it might be a bit too dense for that. It is however a great communal experience and everyone seems to have a different take on it. It is also sure to generate countless lively discussions afterwards.

Set in the smarmy world of big money art, a world run by folks with even bigger egos, The Burnt Orange Heresy exists in the shadow of Alfred Hitchcock. It lulls you with pretentious prattling before it delivers a vicious blow to your senses and illustrates once again that humans are capable of extreme darkness in their thoughts and actions.

Claes Bang (TV’s Dracula) is James Figueras, a failed artist who now earns a crust by lecturing tourists about some of the world’s great art pieces. When he is hired by super art dealer, Joseph Cassidy, played with an elegant level of amorality by Mick Jagger to steal a painting for him, Figueras sees his entry into those rarified waters.

Along the way, his path crosses with Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), a small-town girl trying to feel alive by a visit to the wild side. She gets pulled into his sphere and also helps him unlock a relationship with Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland) a world-famous and reclusive painter, who is Figueras and Cassidy’s intended target for the art theft.

Ultimately Figueras is ill-prepared for the consequences of his actions and his slow disintegration at film’s end is a highlight and leaves much open to the audience. Contrasting vainglorious speech with gritty human behaviours gives The Burnt Orange Heresy a multidimensional look at a rarified world filled with more villains than heroes.

Charming and ambitious art critic, James Figueras (Claes Bang), has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and ask him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Soon, James’ greed and ambition get the better of him, and he finds himself caught in a web of his own making.
