With the adage of separating the art from the artist in mind, viewing A Complete Unknown is quite the experience. Timothée Chalamet is outstanding as Bob Dylan, a man known for being prickly and aloof and he certainly brings those traits out in full but he also infuses the character with a dedication to his musical muse.

Reducing a long professional life down into a much heralded and singular event also pays dividends as it helps the film keep focus. The event in question was Dylan’s performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when he outraged the crowd by delivering an electric and rock-oriented set to the folkies. Little did the crowd on that night know what a pivotal event that would become in musical history.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Chalamet’s take on Dylan challenges you to even like the man, as his sullen nature and mistreatment of the women in his life are amply illustrated. His passion for expressing himself through lyrics and music is however the driving force of his life and it is presented in such a way as to illustrate that little else matters to him. In the modern day, this ethos seems cliche but at the dawn of rock music’s rise in popularity, it is revelatory.

The living and breathing version of Bob Dylan remains a contradiction. The legends of his life’s activities have added up to quit the tome and this celluloid take on an important moment of that life will only add to the depth of the story. He was important then and remains a seminal figure to this day. Now if we could just get him to take a few singing lessons.

The Daltons are on vacation in Italy in an attempt to repair the damage to their marriage caused by moments of malaise and infidelity. Louise (Mackenzie Davis) also struggles to keep the family unit together after her husband Ben (Scoot McNairy) suffers the indignity of losing his job. Into these fragile dynamics steps, Paddy played with a barely contained manic intensity by James McAvoy.

The Daltons’ family unit, which also includes daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler) are strangely drawn to Paddy, his partner Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) and their son Ant (Dan Hough). Louise is hesitant but Ben sees a free spirit in Paddy that he misses in himself and is willing to look past the eccentricities that Paddy has in overabundance. After the Italian holiday finishes, they are invited to join their new friends at their home in England.

What starts as a fairly straightforward domestic tale turns very strange as the threesome ventures into the weird world of Paddy and his farm. As the oddities add up slowly at first and then quickly, the dynamic changes. Then things take a step to the extreme. Friendship turns adversarial and it makes you look at things in an entirely different manner.

James McAvoy’s acting chops are on full display here. He keeps you on the knife’s edge throughout with a performance that is both unsettling and menacing. This is needed to keep your interest as the story slows down and offers few surprises in the final reel. In the parlance of gymnastics, Speak No Evil fails to stick the landing. With McAvoy’s performance in mind, it’s still a worthwhile view but has the aftereffect of preventing you from ever becoming friends with strangers you meet on holiday.

From the moment Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem) a down-on-his-luck magician walks into an exotic pet store and discovers a singing baby croc, you know you are in for something silly. Bardem plays into the comedy by continuing his tradition of big roles and bad hair. Bardem’s crazy foliage and an animated singing gator, what could go possibly wrong?

Under the magician’s tutelage and showing that dance is also part of the retiles’s skill set, Lyle and Hector are ready to conquer the New York stages. Their first show sells out and everything is set for success until the curtain goes up and the stage fright sets in. Lyle (Shawn Mendes) is completely unable to let rip.

From this point on the story shifts to the arrival in the Big Apple of the Primm family. Pops is played by Scoot McNairy. Mother (Constance Wu) and their high-strung son Josh (Winslow Fegley). When the friendless Josh discovers Lyle living in their attic, a cross-species friendship begins as you would expect.Having Lyle be able to communicate only through song and utilising Mendes’ voice to the fullest gives the musical numbers more gravitas than having a non-singing actor attempt the same. This approach makes almost all the completely unbelievable events that happen all part of the fun. It’s silly to the extreme but charming nonetheless.

When the Primm family (Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, Winslow Fegley) moves to New York City, their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and new friends. All of that changes when he discovers Lyle – a singing crocodile (Mendes) who loves baths, caviar and great music-living in the attic of his new home. The two become fast friends, but when Lyle’s existence is threatened by evil neighbour Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman), the Primms must band together with Lyle’s charismatic owner, Hector P. Valenti (Bardem), to show the world that family can come from the most unexpected places and there’s nothing wrong with a big singing crocodile with an even bigger personality.

Based on the best-selling book series by Bernard Waber, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a live-action / CGI musical comedy that brings this beloved character to a new, global audience.

When the Primm family (Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, Winslow Fegley) moves to New York City, their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and new friends. All of that changes when he discovers Lyle – a singing crocodile (Shawn Mendes) who loves baths, caviar and great music-living in the attic of his new home.

The two become fast friends, but when Lyle’s existence is threatened by evil neighbour Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman), the Primm’s must band together with Lyle’s charismatic owner, Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem), to show the world that family can come from the most unexpected places and there’s nothing wrong with a big singing crocodile with an even bigger personality.
