The all-star ensemble features the voices of Meryl Streep (Insect Queen), Dave Franco (Titus), Kathy Najimy (Dr. Sam), Eduardo Franco (Loaf), Melissa Villaseñor (Ellen), Ego Nwodim (Fish Queen), Vanessa Bayer (Diane), Sam Richardson (Conner), Aparna Nancherla (Nisha), Nichole Sakura (Reptile Queens), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Bird King), Steve Purcell (Amphibian King), Karen Huie (Grandma Tanaka) and Tom Law (Tom Lizard), along with previously announced voice cast members Piper Curda (Mabel), Bobby Moynihan (King George) and Jon Hamm (Mayor Jerry).

“We have assembled a legendary cast for ‘Hoppers,’ and the voice talent really gave the film all they had. Be it uproarious humour, heartfelt emotion or crazy animal noises, they delivered beyond our expectations,” stated director Daniel Chong and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle.

The trailer provides a closer look at the animated comedy adventure which introduces Mabel, an animal lover who seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. Using the technology, Mabel uncovers mysteries within the animal world that are beyond anything she could have imagined.

“Hoppers” features the voice of Bobby Moynihan as King George, an undeniably optimistic, kind and larger-than-life beaver who is the leader of the pond and king of the mammals. Jon Hamm voices Mayor Jerry, a politician running for re-election in Beaverton. Under his shiny, perfectly coiffed hair and matching public persona, Jerry is losing his cool over the one thing he can’t control: Mabel.

“Hoppers” is directed by Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”), produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle (“Incredibles 2”) and features an original score by composer Mark Mothersbaugh (“Thor: Ragnarok”). Coming to cinemas this March.

All of the parts are in place for this generation’s version of Little Women. It’s got a talented and very now writer/director in Greta Gerwig (Ladybird) and an it girl in actress Saoirse Ronan as the lead sister Jo March. The rest of the cast includes some heavy hitters such as Meryl Streep, Laura Dean and the in vogue Timothée Chalamet.

Gerwig gives the film a contemporary feel with the liberal use of different timelines, yet offers few visual cues so it necessitates the need of the audience to pay close attention. She also plays on the actors strong points and minimises their lesser strengths. Although allowing Emma Watson’s occasional reversion to her English accent is an odd oversight.

Often considered the American equivalent of what Jane Austin offered the British readers, minus the sharp wit, Little Women highlights the frustrations and limitations that women faced on both sides of the pond. That in the time frame over fifty years after Austin’s stories were based still saw the same restrictions in the New World only spoke to the frustratingly slow progress that women of that period faced.

Life in the eighteen hundreds, especially during the US Civil War was much harsher than this version illustrates but its presentation of female empowerment is a timeless positive. It’s unrealistically idilic ending not withstanding, the ideas in the original book planted the seeds to fight for a more enlightened and necessary mindset. Unfortunately it’s a struggle that still exists today. Meaningful popular culture can shine a light on changes that need to be made and Little Women is illuminating.

With that in mind, it is even more impressive that the house of mouse could succeed so admirably with Mary Poppins Returns.

Despite the over fifty-year gap between the first Poppins film released back in 1964 and the new sequel, Disney has brought the story up to date. Even correcting quite a few of the wonky elements from the first edition and resisting the temptation to go all CGI crazy. The film still has that old school charm visually and this includes what appears to be hand drawn animation.

After the fact, Emily Blunt seems the perfect choice to pick up the reins from Julie Andrews and the new script gives her plenty of lines to deliver as only a posh pom could. Elsewhere the cast provide good support and it was a real treat to see the 93 year-old Dick Van Dyke return to the screen in a cameo.

Too far removed for most of the current audience members to remember seeing the original up on the big screen, this new version will easily provide the basis for new fond memories. Along with the release earlier this year of Christopher Robin, Disney is trying its best to create new memories and with Mary Poppins Returns consider it a job well done.

Spanning time and now generations, the songs of ABBA continue to find new followers. This point is strongly illustrated by the sequel to Mama Mia! Part two arrives ten years after the release of original film and it throws everything but the kitchen sink at the new audience.

It tries its best to deliver something new with what is in essence the same set of songs as the first film (and musical on which the movie is based). It dips into flash backs, origin stories and flushes out the characters with extended back stories. They even add Cher to the mix and bring Meryl Streep back from the grave.

It’s unfair to be too critical of all this effort as the end product is rather infectious and more than a little bit charming. The challenge is not to your intellect but to keep from tapping your toes and singing along to the little bits of ear candy.

Even if you’re not a fan of those Swedish superstars, you will know most of the lyrics through osmosis. Their songs have been used is almost every context. See Mama Mia: Here We Go Again with someone you love, especially if they love ABBA.

From its high powered cast (director Steven Spielberg has a rolodex that runs deep) to its high powered story, The Post is a film from its time for our time. The relevance it shares with events of today is strong and the film’s dramatic structure plays out like a great conspiracy theory drama. This time it’s the US government telling the big lie.

Tom Hanks has never been better and his visually advancing age and gruff vocal delivery helps one to see him as less of a nice guy and more as a down and dirty fighter. There are great performances everywhere, though. Even the sadly under-utilised Sarah Paulson has a short but very impactful monologue that gives the film even more purpose to the slowly awakening world of women’s rightful place in society. It also highlights Spielberg’s not so hidden agenda.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

If Hollywood has truly turned the corner on its solid past, then films like this with an overt message might become the norm. If the future holds drama of this caliber, then bring it on, because a message is always more impactful when it’s delivered with this level of commitment and craft.

Look at The Post as drama of the highest order first and message cinema second. And it’s not really giving anything away but Spielberg being Spielberg can’t help himself with a coda that reinforces his message at film’s end but this time out it’s a fantastic one.

Get ready to sing and dance, laugh and love all over again.

Ten years after Mamma Mia! The Movie grossed more than $600 million around the world, you are invited to return to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi in an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA. With the film’s original cast returning and new additions including Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver), the musical comedy will open in Summer 2018.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, producers of the original film. Craymer is also the creator and producer of the worldwide smash-hit stage musical.

Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, writes and directs the sequel from a story by Catherine Johnson, Richard Curtis and Parker. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus return to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Phyllida Lloyd, Richard Curtis and Nicky Kentish Barnes also serve as executive producers.
