As the start of the new year brings about that annual slide into the awards season, there are often times that one film that rises above the rest. This year’s outlier is The Brutalist. It takes you on a long (215 minutes) and arduous journey and only reveals the motivations behind the main character’s actions at the very end.

It is the kind of work that asks much from its audience. It cleverly sets up the initial elements of the back story with a tilted view from Ellis Island at the Statue Of Liberty. The huddled masses are easily identified as post-World War II immigrants still shell-shocked by the horrors that they endured during that great war.

The focus then shifts to one man, László Tóth brought to life on the screen via an amazing performance by Adrien Brody. We are left to study him and slowly discover his motivations and the angst that drives him into action and overdrives him into obsession. We discover he had a successful career as an architect before the war ended that.

He is given a chance to resume his craft by the rich and inscrutable Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. played by the outstanding Guy Pearce. Van Buren remains a mystery to the very end. László’s journey is told by circumstance and you are left to process the mostly visual information to work things out. This is hyper-intelligent cinema and a study of obsession driven by the darkest of times, The Brutalist will render you emotionally spent and fascinated by that process.

“The Clearing” is an eight-part psychological thriller based on the best-selling crime thriller ‘In The Clearing’ by author J.P. Pomare, inspired by the darkness of real-life cults in Australia and around the world.

Filmed across Victoria, “The Clearing” is an emotional and psychological thriller that follows the nightmares of a cult and a woman who’s forced to face the demons from her past in order to stop the kidnapping and coercion of innocent children in the future.

The series burrows under the skin and inside the mind, blurring the lines between past and present, reality and nightmare in a truly unnerving way.

Teresa Palmer (Discovery of Witches), Miranda Otto (The Unusual Suspects, Homeland) and Guy Pearce (Jack Irish, Mare of Easttown) lead a stellar line-up of Australian talent including Hazem Shammas (Safe Harbour), Mark Coles-Smith (Mystery Road), Kate Mulvany (The Twelve) and rising star Julia Savage (Blaze, Mr Inbetween)

“The Clearing” is directed by Jeffrey Walker (Young Rock, Lambs of God) and Gracie Otto (Seriously Red, Bump, Deadloch). The series is created and written by Elise McCredie (Stateless) and Matt Cameron (Jack Irish), with co-writer Osamah Sami (Ali’s Wedding).

Director Jeffrey Walker said: “The Clearing is a haunting psychological thriller, featuring some of Australia’s finest talent in front, and behind, the lens.”

“An extraordinary senior cast in Teresa, Miranda and Guy, are supported by breakthrough young actors, Julia and Lily. The atmosphere and mood of this piece is so unique, I truly hope that it captivates, enthralls and thrills the audience,” he continued.

Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company in Australia and New Zealand said: “We’re proud this Australian story The Clearing debuts globally on Disney+ under our Star entertainment banner on May 24. This is our first Australian produced scripted series and there’s more to come.”

“The Clearing” is produced for Disney+ by Wooden Horse’s Jude Troy (The Other Guy 1 & 2), with Wooden Horse’s Richard Finlayson and Egeria’s Elizabeth Bradley serving as executive producers alongside Jeffrey Walker, Jude Troy, Elise McCredie and Matt Cameron.

With details of a real-life story at its core, The Last Vermeer illustrates that Hollywood when it tries will never run out of new ideas for films. Based in post-World War II Holland, it tells a tale of greed, artistic hubris, war profiteering, and forgery. Han Van Meegeren a painter himself who went on the become a Dutch fork hero is played here by Guy Pearce. He imbues the character with a glorious sense of flamboyance and ego.

After hostilities ended he was charged with selling Dutch cultural property to the Nazis and faced a possible death sentence. During the trial, he used the defense that he actually forged the paintings and thus was able to avoid capital punishment.

Starting as an investigative yarn, the film features Danish actor Claes Bang playing Captain Joseph Piller, who is tasked with ferreting out war profiteers and collaborators in Holland. The film switches gear midway through and turns into a courtroom drama and gives Pearce the chance to preen with abandon. Van Meegeren is now considered to be one of history’s greatest forgers.

The film takes great artist license (pun intended) with the actual story and Van Meegeren’s life is even more interesting than the one presented on screen. Although his forgery defense was successful at avoiding the firing squad he was still convicted of falsification and fraud charges but died of a heart attack before he had to serve his one-year sentence. In all, he duped buyers out of the equivalent of almost a quarter of a billion dollars in today’s money.

With an emphasis on fiction over science, first time film director Dave Wilson brings Valiant Comics’ character Bloodshot to the big screen. This mash up of Robocop and Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s comic book mini series Hard Boiled is supremely silly and feloniously fun.

Casting Vin Diesel in the lead role pretty much sums up the approach to the dialogue and having Wilson, with his long history with visual effects on both film and video games gives a clear indication of the intent with visuals. The science of the film is so dodgy, it need not be mentioned again.

The story as it is, is very minimal and revolves around Diesel’s Ray Garrison / Bloodshot character being a recycled killer. His programming is supplied by Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) who gets to ham it up big time. Comic relief and the approval to mac out on junk food is provided by Lamorne Morris as Wilfred Wigans.

In these times of overwhelming reality, escapism is needed now more than ever and the disconnect required by this work on the rocky road to enjoyment is all encompassing. Load up with snacks, create and enter your own comfort zone and engage on a level of mindless enjoyment second to none. Just don’t forget to wash your hands afterwards.
