Mummies Movie Review

Aimed squarely at a younger audience, Mummies stands out from the crowd by virtue of the sensibilities of its Spanish origins. It is refreshingly free of the Yank’s proclivity for bombast in their animated adventures and as an added bonus, the film features no talking animals.

Director Juan Jesús García Galocha weaves a tale of a secret hidden city populated by Egyptian Mummies who have lived there for thousands of years. Through circumstance members of the community have to venture out into the real world. In this case, it’s London, England.

Thut (Joe Thomas) is an ex-chariot racer who has lost his nerve and is then mistakenly chosen to wed Princess Nefer (Eleanor Tomlinson). Before the nuptials can take place, an evil archaeologist Lord Carnaby (Dan Starkey) absconds with the wedding ring and returns to England. The chase is now on.

The inherent oddities of the British public are played out for comic effect and most of the film’s humour comes from this circumstance. There are no real surprises with how things play out but the story is told in such an easy manner it’s quite beguiling.
