MINI British Film Festival – Old Boys Movie Review

Updating the Cyrano de Bergerac tale, this time set in a posh British school with all the class system and bully tactics in place, gives the 1897 play a new lease on life. Alex Lawther (The End Of The F***ing World) is Amberson, the geek who helps Winchester (Jonah Hauer-King) the dim witted stud get the girl.

The girl in question is Agnes (Pauline Etienne), the headstrong daughter of the school’s new French teacher played by Denis Ménochet (Inglourious Basterds). As the budding romance between Agnes and Winchester progresses, it soon runs off the rails. From this point on things lunge towards the slap stick before it finishes with serious intent.

The film successfully mixes humour with a number of worthwhile life lessons. It’s all filtered through that established British schoolboy sensibility and this keeps things quirky and the end squarely in that old battler tradition.
