Double Blind Movie Review

Having always thought that clinical drug trials that use human subjects to test experimental drugs were sketchy to begin with, Double-Blind takes that supposition to an extreme conclusion. Taking advantage of human participants who are down on their luck is only the start of the evils perpetrated by the faceless corporation Blackwood Pharmaceuticals.

While all of the test subjects are damaged in one way or another, Claire (Millie Brady of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies fame) seems to be suffering more than most. She is sullen, withdrawn, and uncommunicative, but she is also perfect hero material. As the trials get underway, things soon run off the rails.

The speeding train gathers momentum and starts to spit off passengers. When the Blackwood nurse who is supervising the trials meets an untimely and rather gruesome end, the remaining patients are left to fend for themselves. The drug being tested proves to be fatal if the subject falls asleep so that adds to their woes.

By the film’s end, its intentions will be clear as an observation of Big Pharma’s avarice and disregard for humanity. As sleep deprivation takes hold, the subjects become more primal and far more dangerous to one another. The filmmakers successfully use this transition to ramp up the terror and heighten the tension. While the conclusion is somewhat predicable, it is still strangely satisfying.

Double Blind is available now on Prime Video, Apple TV, Google TV and YouTube!
