KANGAROO is a family comedy inspired by the life of Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns, founder of the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs.

It follows Chris Masterman (played by Ryan Corr), a former TV personality who finds himself stranded in a remote Outback town — where he meets 12-year-old Charlie, a spirited Indigenous girl with a talent for rescuing orphaned joeys. Together, they form an unlikely friendship — working to rehabilitate young kangaroos and finding a sense of connection and belonging in the process.

Set against the spectacular landscape of Central Australia, KANGAROO is a story about family, friendship, and conservation — brought to life by an incredible Australian cast including Ryan Corr, Deborah Mailman, Wayne Blair, and introducing newcomer Lily Whiteley.

With themes of community, wildlife rescue and the natural beauty of the Outback, KANGAROO is the kind of feel-good Australian story that families can experience together — with humour, heart, and a deep respect for the place it was made.

What starts as a rumination on religion and the gateway to spirituality it can provide turns its focus by the film’s end to the reverse of that perception. New Boy (Aswan Reid) a young First Nations lad is yanked from his homeland and literally dragged to a remote monastery.

His new home is run by two renegade nuns played by Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman. Set in rolling fields of wheat writer/director Warwick Thornton who also triples as director of photography perfectly captures the sense of isolation.

The boy is thrown into a way of life that is almost completely foreign to him and he keeps his distance from the other boys in the orphanage. Slowly the true nature of his character is revealed and he is shown to actually have the spark of life at his fingertips.

The fact that many organised religions are deaf to the innate spirituality of the people it attempts to save is given full measure here. It is delivered in a subtle manner but a firm one nonetheless. It’s a beautifully presented story with a sting in the tail.

Red (Krew Boylan) is a hot mess. Scatterbrained, always late for every appointment and soon to be fired from the latest job. Her main refuge is disappearing into the world of Dolly Parton. After she is spotted in full Dolly regalia at an office party and offered a tryout for a tribute show by a lady named Teeth (Celeste Barber) her life changes forever.

When a story is built around a person finding their way in life, it’s always more engaging if you feel empathetic towards that person and it is here that Seriously Red presents several challenges. Had the character of Red been a man their behaviour would be easy to dismiss as boorish and guilty of moments of toxic masculinity.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Flipping the script around to the female gender diffuses some of this but it’s still problematic. Within the context of those limitations, you sympathise with Red’s desire to find a place in the world while being frustrated by the circular nature of her self-sabotage. Many of her decisions are hard to fathom and this forces you to try to put yourself in her shoes.

There is no single path to self-fulfilment and the film challenges you to see past your own views on many things. In this regard, it is a successful work and its moments of humour ease the journey. Whether you see this as a provocation or entertainment, only you can decide.

Part rom-com, part travel ad for the Northern Territory, Top End Wedding is a fun romp with some awe inspiring visuals. Director Wayne Blair continues with the unity themes he inspired with his previous film, The Sapphires, even working again with the actors Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens.

Tapsell plays Lauren, a lawyer climbing the ladder at a law firm in Adelaide. Her boyfriend Ned (Gwilym Lee) is also a lawyer but is sick of his job as a prosecutor. On the day he quits his job, he also proposes to Lauren. They have to plan a rushed wedding to fit the demands on her time placed by her single minded boss, Hampton (Kerry Fox).

When Lauren returns home to the top end, her mother has left her father and gone walk about. She doesn’t want to tie the knot without Mum there so the search is on. Her and Ned continually arrive just that little bit too late at various locations where her mother has been and the activities Mum has indulged in are quite humorous.

When the wayward parent is found, the film turns quite touching. Lauren and her Mum return to their ancestral home, the Tiwi Islands and get back in touch with the old ways. The Aboriginal culture is shown in rich vibrant colours and both mother and daughter share some very heartfelt moments together. There are times the actors play second fiddle to the surrounds but there is still enough story to hold it all together quite nicely.
