Set during the horrors of World War One, The War Below tells of an audacious plan by the British military to free the loggerhead between the German and British troops stuck in the trenches on the Western Front. They intend to tunnel underneath the German trenches and plant bombs below them.

The story is built around the actions of William Hawkin (Sam Hazeldine) a family man and miner rejected for active duty due to the early onset of miner’s lung. His shame at not being able to serve drives him and his men to extraordinary lengths in the undertaking. There is also a critical look at the military’s penchant for staid and possessive thought in disregarding these non enlisted men’s heroics.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Matilda’s somewhat idyllic life is brought to a crashing halt when rebel soldiers shatter the tranquil life of her village. She escapes into the world of Great Expectations to cope with the horrors and begins an imaginary relationship with a character from the book, Pip (Eka Darville).

The mix of professional and non-professional actors and being filmed on an actual island in Papua New Guinea give the work a very believable feel. This believability is what makes the film’s emotional content so heartbreaking. Its ultimate feat is not just the main character’s escape from the island but also the ability to make the audience members feel and care about a real world tragedy and triumph.

Just as her quick wit is winning them over, strange happenings and holes in her backstory incite paranoia surrounding her true mission.

Controversy aside, Zero Dark Thirty is a taunt thriller that says less about American politics and more about the way the world views the threat of global terrorism. Even during the film’s most graphic moments, you just know that in the real world much more severe atrocities have been perpetrated in the name of weeding out terrorists and their cells.

The claim that the film glorifies torture is interesting as well as the torture scenes in question in the film yield very little useful information and actually show the futility of certain kinds of forced confessions. The film is about the global hunt for Osama bin Laden after 9-11 and he as a person is given very little exposure and as such almost becomes this mythical boogieman.

The politics behind his actions are given little screen time and bin Laden becomes the modern day equivalent to the German movie bad guys in the fifties, Russians bad guys in the sixties and seventies and Eastern European bad guys in the eighties and nineties. The film also has a slightly anti US government feel as the upper echelon officials seem to be blind to what is right in their faces. It takes the zealot behaviour and unwavering obsession of female CIA analyst Maya (Jessica Chastain) to spur the behemoth government into final action.

The film’s structure builds and builds to a suitable climax and in this it does not disappoint as the final few scenes are real edge of the seat stuff. As is true with almost all cinematic versions of actual events, the reality of the truth lies somewhere else but what we are given can be taken as effective popcorn thrills but not much more.

Writer/Director Christopher Nolan shows he has a way with a human story with every bit the impact and drama that his high concept films feature. With Dunkirk, he wisely distills a massive event down into an accessible examination seen through the experiences of just a few small groups.

In this context, he build tension in a masterful way. The film features very little dialogue and Hans Zimmer’s score is a major player in the film’s tone and emotional impact. The tension is fierce and relentless and never loosens its grip throughout the 106 minute running time.

The horror of war is never far from view but it isn’t presented in an overly graphic or bloody way. This approach adds even more to the film’s impact because it doesn’t distance the viewer with the off putting gore and carnage that becomes most war film’s stock and trade.

There are moments of great intensity in both film score and sound effects volume with the howl of planes diving and the discharge of armaments. There is also the beauty and inspiration shown deeply in moments of human resolve. This work vividly validates Nolan’s place among the all time greats.
