Quietly affecting and beautifully shot, Land tells of withdrawal and redemption. Robin Wright’s work in front and behind the camera dispenses information in an almost Zen-like fashion and the emotions feel real. This is her feature length film directorial debut. Wright plays Edee, a woman whose life has been broken into tiny shards by a horrific event.

We are given few details about the actual cause but as the story progresses, small details coalesce into a narrative of a person so broken she feels she must retreat into absolute solitude. She does this by uprooting what is left of her life and moving to an isolated cabin deep in the woods of Wyoming, the least populated state in America.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Once there it becomes quickly obvious that she is almost completely unprepared for a life in the wild. There is a stark contrast between the stunning beauty of the land and the woeful condition of the cabin she has chosen. Once there, things turn bad, leading to a near-death experience when she is discovered by Miguel (Demián Bichir).

Their emerging relationship is beautifully rendered. Miguel also has a dark secret at his core but he is a practical man whose outdoor skills are well developed. The two connect on a teacher and student level. You become close to Edee and the fright of her inexperience. You also revel in the emergence of her climb from the darkness. This satisfying journey is conveyed with consummate skill.

First the conundrum, I love baseball movies but don’t especially like the game itself and would never even entertain the thought of actually watching an entire game. So when I head that Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) was working on the screenplay for the Bennett Miller (Capote) take on Michael Lewis’ book Moneyball: The Art Of Winning An Unfair Game, I was intrigued.

Lewis’ book follows the reinvention of baseball by using computer and statistical analysis to achieve the desired individual results and bypasses the traditional way that teams scouted players and as a topic of a ‘sports movie’ presented quite the challenge. It’s to the filmmaker’s credit that a subject that could have resulted in a very dry cinema experience has been turned into such a warm human examination.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The acting is excellent throughout and Brad Pitt continues to fill out an ever evolving and interesting resume of acting jobs while Johan Hill is quite effective in one of his first serious roles. There are no real heroes or villains in the piece but that still doesn’t prevent you from rooting for Pitt’s character, Oakland A’s manger Billy Beane as he tries to reinvent the team.

In the same way that The Social Network turned zeros and ones into an engaging topic, Moneyball succeeds as both human drama and as a case study of how science changes both our business and leisure worlds. Regardless of your like or dislike of the actual game itself, Moneyball will provide a very entertaining time. As for motivating one to watch an actually game, the conundrum remains intact.

As visual arresting today as the first edition was 35 years ago, Blade Runner 2049 asks as many new questions as it does answering questions of old. It’s visual mix of cultures and moods (complements of genius director of photography Roger Deakins) adds so much to each scene that the film is never less than visually stunning.

The story still raises questions about what it is to be truly human but from a slightly different vantage point than before and the main actors keep things as fluid as ever. In a defiant nod to the gender bias in a lot of action films, the big baddie, Luv (Sylvia Hoeks) is a woman this time and she kicks some serious butt.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The film’s long running time (162 minutes) plays out in a very leisurely manner and might challenge viewers spoon fed on blockbuster action movies. Its appeal lies in the individual interpretations of its audience members and the dialogue it creates after the film has washed over you.

Good science fiction should both entertain and create scenarios that develop serious thought and Blade Runner 2049 succeeds emphatically in both these areas.
