Signing off the last edition of the most recent trilogy in style, Dominion gets the whole gang back together to join in on the fun and much amusement ensues. The return of Sam Neill and Laura Dern plays out most entertainingly and Jeff Goldblum gets to riff as only he can.

The dinosaurs that escaped at the end of Fallen Kingdom have now inhabited the entire planet and the humans have a real problem on their hands. An evil CEO Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott) manipulating things behind the scenes only exacerbates the problems.

While it can be silly and predictable and often returns to themes featured in all the other films this does little to diminish the excitement. It’s tense and engaging stuff and the 146-minute running time flies by. See it with the entire family but be prepared to comfort the young children afterwards.

The tale begins when a sub called the Titan needs to pick up a group of French solders from a Syrian coastline and evade detection from both an Iranian frigate sharing the waters and Syrian ground troops. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the extremes the crew have to go through to avoid detection and how tightly knit the crew have to be. It also provides some funny moments as insight into the crews behaviour to remain sane is provided.

As a new player comes onto the scene, the tension of the mission ramps up exponentially. This draws you in with overwhelming feelings of claustrophobia and impending peril. As the game of cat and mouse escalates and more weapons technology is introduced, it expands your perception of the actual dangers presented to both sides of the conflict. After this mission, the film gives you information on the obsessive lives of the submariners. A life where the next assignment is never far from their mind.

In the film’s second half, the danger to the crew and the world at large escalates into events that could have worldwide consequences. Fans of the submarine genre will find much to like here and even those that are indifferent to war movies will enjoy the psychological and political battles that underline and inform most of the action. It’s a compelling insight to a very rare breed of modern day soldier.

The latest edition skips the third Brown book, The Lost Symbol and drops Harvard University professor Robert Langdon (Hanks) into the usual world of intrigue. Conspiracies play a more reduced role this time and the film plays out with more action and less intrigue. The action is largely set in Venice, which is an excellent choice as it’s one of the world’s most unique looking cities.

The casting is not the film’s strongest suit as Hanks and lead actress Felicity Jones as his caregiver Dr. Sienna Brooks don’t have an overabundance of on-screen chemistry. Ben Foster as the big baddie is underutilized as well. The rest of the cast including Irrfan Khan and Omar Sy put in workman like performances.

In a crowded field of globe trotting super sleuths and action heroes, the Da Vinci Code films rely on the enticement of a good global conspiracy. Unfortunately in this latest film edition of one of Brown’s novels, it just doesn’t capitalize enough on the series’ most obvious appeal.
