Kudos to Illumination Studios for creating the post-prequel with Minions: The Rise of Gru. Chronologically it follows Minions (which introduced Gru) but happens before Despicable Me. Set in the swinging seventies, it’s filled with groovy tunes and wild flights of imagination.

Young Gru (Steve Carell) who the Minions call “little boss” still lives at home with his mother Marlena (Julie Andrews) and a large gaggle of his little yellow buddies. They have barged in on him and are overrunning his basement. Gru is in the midst of finding his evil bearing.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

When a job interview goes bad Gru gets sticky-fingered with a precious medallion and sets into motion a crazy chain of events. These include ancient legends discovered, moments of magic, a coming-of-tale and an easy-to-digest message. The world of animation is used to the fullest and the film looks amazingly oversaturated with colour and action.

Seems Hollywood’s current formula for post-lockdown success is based on franchise returns, superhero yarns and old favourites. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if the project shows as much invention and passion for the animated art form as Minions: The Rise of Gru does. It’s feel-good and frivolous fun.

This June, from the biggest animated franchise in history and global cultural phenomenon, comes the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain, in Minions: The Rise of Gru.

In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Teeming with Illumination’s signature subversive humour, pop-culture sophistication, full-hearted emotion, bold music sensibility, and over-the-top action, Minions: The Rise of Gru features a thrilling new cast of stars, including, as members of the Vicious 6, Taraji P. Henson as cool and confident leader Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance and Danny Trejo as Stronghold. The film also features Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist, Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, an acupuncturist with mad Kung Fu skills, and Oscar winner Julie Andrews as Gru’s maddeningly self-absorbed mom.

Steered by the franchise’s original creators, Minions: The Rise of Gru is produced by visionary Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud. The film is directed by returning franchise filmmaker Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions), co-directed by Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets films), and features the iconic voice of Pierre Coffin as the Minions and a killer ʼ70s soundtrack courtesy of legendary Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff.

Minions: The Rise of Gru will be released in Australian cinemas June 16!

Bringing Dora to the big screen was accomplished via the conversion to the live action format The early story arc is a fish out of water tale as Dora is sent from her home in the jungle to live in the city and attend high school. Her relentless optimism is not easily absorbed and she becomes a point of ridicule. It to the film’s benefit that her intelligence is not watered down for her to fit in.

The best of these is a scene where the airborne spores from a patch of giant flowers dose the group and during their hallucinations turns them into the original cartoon characters. It is imaginative and quite funny. Might take a little expanding to the little ones though.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold replaces the education elements of the animated series with the wonder of the real world, with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure. If this approach instills in the kids a sense of wonderment in the actual outdoors, it can be considered a success.

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever — High School.

Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.

“Growing up, I really related to Dora, in the sense that she spoke both English and Spanish. Then, at a young age, I had the same haircut, so everyone called me Dora! When they sent me the script I was like, ‘I have to do this. I’ve been her my whole life!’”
– Isabela Moner

“Like any great family movie, parents will have as much fun as their kids. Lots of humor and lots action! I can’t believe how talented [the cast] is. The first night [after shooting] I went back to my wife and said, ‘I’m really worried [that I’m going to have to up my game] because these kids are really good!’”
– Eugenio Derbez

“I was thrilled to join this cast and be a part of bringing the story of Dora to life. She has been such a positive role model for kids around the globe. The film is so much fun and has a lot of heart, and I can’t wait for audiences to enjoy it this summer!”
– Eva Longoria

“My daughter grew up watching Dora, so I knew her pretty well. But are you the same person at 16 as you are at six? I think the great thing is that, in this movie, Dora kind of is! That’s her charm. She has grown up by herself in the jungle, with just her parents, so the world hasn’t put her down. No one has ever told her she can’t do anything; she’s not lived through social media and peer pressure, so she doesn’t care what people think. And you love her for it.”
– James Bobin

Dora and the Lost City of Gold stars Isabela Moner, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, Jeff Wahlberg, Nicholas Coombe, Madeleine Madden and Danny Trejo – swinging into cinemas September 19!
