The formation of new and inventive ways of creating peril is impressive. Even hardcore fans of the franchise will be surprised and delighted with the results as will their ability to pick up on the easter eggs scattered throughout. It successfully sets out for something new while still respecting what has come before.

Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) is a mining worker that gets screwed over by the megacorporation Weyland-Yutani. Having extended her tour of duty by years, she decides to side with her brother Tyler (Archie Renaux) on a crazy scheme to travel to a distant planet that offers a better life than the one found underground.

This involves appropriating parts from a spaceship that appears abandoned in space. Unfortunately, the ship is not completely empty and plays host to some most unwanted inhabitants. Alvarez succeeds in building a tension that never completely dissipates and the imagination used in creating new hurdles to overcome keeps things moving at a fast pace. This is clever filmmaking and should appeal to fans of the franchise and newbies alike.

The film takes those real-world situations and lets them run to what some believe is a natural conclusion, Civil War. Through force, California and Texas have succeeded from the Union and become the dominant military power and have sent troops East to Washington DC to capture and execute the President. Into the fracas, we catch up with famous war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and Journalist Joel (Wagner Moura). The horrors Lee has witnessed are starting to catch up with her.

Their travels bring them into contact with budding photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and the developing story of the three gives the story its heart and soul. The presentation of war-torn America is shocking in its blandness and the unceremonious occupation by different factions of the battling military. There is not the usual presentation of a good side or a bad side and both sides are committing outrageous wartime atrocities.

As the self-proclaimed greatest country in the world seems to be teetering on the verge of demonstrative civil unrest and potential social collapse, the circumstances that make up Civil War seem less and less far-fetched. It’s this possible reality that gives the film such an uncomfortable edge. That it plays things straight and unvarnished only adds to the movie’s impact and appeal. This is buttressed by the believable human story at its core.

While it’s good to see John Boyega operate outside the constraints of the Star Wars world, he is given little to do besides being heroic. His charisma still breaks through but he is held back by a script that is very one dimensional. With its dedicated agenda of maximum action and sceptical, it will however play well to the right target market.

The director of the moment Guillermo del Toro was behind the first of the franchise and shares producer credits on this edition but the film shows little of his imagination. It’s a very straight forward action yarn and could have used more concept details to flush out the experience.

As a treat for Australian members of the audience, the film was shoot is various locations around the country and it is always fun to try to identify places that you have actually visited.
