There is a nostalgic air to The End of Oak Street that is quite engaging. This permeates into almost all aspects of the film. It starts with its look, set in suburban Middle America in the eighties; its colour palette is awash with warm and somewhat faded tones. The acting is also delivered with a style that rubs against today’s hyper-realistic approach. It’s almost quaint.

Writer/director David Robert Mitchell continues his fascination with American suburbia with a Science Fiction yarn that involves dinosaurs and time portals. The story is also a bit of a throwback with its presentation of danger. As the Thunder Lizards and their ilk ramp up their occupational numbers, the violence inherent in their ways is played mostly for comic effect.

A-list actors Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor are given roles in which their lives are mired in the downward trajectory of an unhappy union. She is a frustrated writer, and he has problems with employment while secretly day drinking. They endure plain lives with an optimism that feels from another time. When their heroism emerges, it feels organic.

The End of Oak Street reminds one of a time in the cinema universe that would have felt right at home in the days of drive-ins and enjoying on-screen peril while rugged up in your jammies, drinking hot cocoa while being surrounded by your family members and enjoying every minute. It’s the kind of look back at a simpler time that will always feel welcoming.

From producer James Wan, one of the most influential architects of modern horror, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the studio behind Backrooms and Obsession, comes a terrifying trip from breakout genre director Rob Savage, into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.

Academy Award® winner Jessica Chastain (It Chapter Two, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) stars in dual roles as Bela’s mother and as “Other Mommy,” a manifestation of the entity. Jay Duplass (Transparent, Industry) plays Daddo, Bela’s father, and Arabella Olivia Clark (The Housemaid, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle) plays Bela.

Set against the near-complete global breakdown among certain warring nations (not unlike elements of the current world situation), Steven continues to answer the big questions in a way only Spielberg can. He returns to the age-old question: Is there life on other planets? In this entertaining romp. His craft remains peerless, and his alien ideas are as kooky as ever
.

The main theme is a well-used one, that aliens have been visiting Earth for decades, and the truth is being kept from the public by the US government and in a slight departure, aided this time by an evil multinational corporation. Curiously, Spielberg’s approach highlights only modern events and completely ignores those other alien breeding grounds like the Egyptian and both the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Too much of a good thing, I guess.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The structure of the film is based around a whistleblower arc and plays out in quite a thrilling manner. The alien technology that backs up the main chase is as outrageous as all the other efforts in this genre, but that does little to distract from the fun. Steven even finds a line of biblical scripture that reinforces the belief in life on other planets. It’s all based in a fantasy land and reinforces the truth that we humans will probably never know the accurate details.

Unfortunately, there are times that the director just can’t help himself, and the final few minutes seem completely unnecessary. It once again feels like he lacks complete trust in his audience and has to overstate the main theme to make sure everyone gets it. The almost complete grasp of his craft makes these moments so unnecessary. That distraction aside, Disclosure Day is a lot of fun and raises more questions than it does answers about those little grey men.
