With the adage of separating the art from the artist in mind, viewing A Complete Unknown is quite the experience. Timothée Chalamet is outstanding as Bob Dylan, a man known for being prickly and aloof and he certainly brings those traits out in full but he also infuses the character with a dedication to his musical muse.

Reducing a long professional life down into a much heralded and singular event also pays dividends as it helps the film keep focus. The event in question was Dylan’s performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when he outraged the crowd by delivering an electric and rock-oriented set to the folkies. Little did the crowd on that night know what a pivotal event that would become in musical history.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Chalamet’s take on Dylan challenges you to even like the man, as his sullen nature and mistreatment of the women in his life are amply illustrated. His passion for expressing himself through lyrics and music is however the driving force of his life and it is presented in such a way as to illustrate that little else matters to him. In the modern day, this ethos seems cliche but at the dawn of rock music’s rise in popularity, it is revelatory.

The living and breathing version of Bob Dylan remains a contradiction. The legends of his life’s activities have added up to quit the tome and this celluloid take on an important moment of that life will only add to the depth of the story. He was important then and remains a seminal figure to this day. Now if we could just get him to take a few singing lessons.

Blumhouse Productions continues in its efforts to breath new life into older and sometimes forgotten franchises with The Exorcist: Believer. When the original Exorcist film came out in 1973 it set a new standard for what the medium was capable of in the way of scaring an audience. It was so effective it almost created a collective mass hysteria.

A lot of scary movies have been released since then and the audiences of today need a much bigger jolt to get the heart racing. Believer wisely avoids that arms race and instead delivers a heathy dose of nostalgia along with the thrills. This includes the return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil and a satisfying cameo that everyone will see coming.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

In some way this newest edition ups the ante by featuring two young ladies who become possessed instead of just one. The two teens, Lidya Jewett as Angela and Olivia O’Neill as Katherine are just two normal kids until the devil comes a calling. Their transformations are quick and extreme. The films builds it structure and momentum on the exorcism, not the girl’s transformation.

With the emphasis building up to the clash between good and evil it needed a more robust ceremony to completely sell writer/director David Gordon Green’s vision. His past experience with the horror genre helming the Halloween franchise shows he’s more than capable of providing modern day thrills but this comes up a little short. It took him a few Halloween films to hit his stride and he’s inked in to do the next Exorcist and hopefully it follows his trajectory with those Michael Myers tales.

Exactly 50 years ago this spring, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Thursday, October 5, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.

Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar® nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own.

But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia O’Neill), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

For the first time since the 1973 film, Oscar® winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, an actress who has been forever altered by what happened to her daughter Regan five decades before.

The film also stars Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hereditary) as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, and Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (Harriet, The Righteous Gemstones) and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Fosse/Verdon, Bloodline) as the parents of Katherine, Angela’s friend.

When The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, was released, it changed the culture forever, obliterating box office records and earning 10 Academy Award® nominations, becoming the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.

The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green from a screenplay by Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray) and David Gordon Green, from a story by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), Danny McBride (Halloween trilogy) and David Gordon Green, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty.

The film is produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse and by David Robinson and James G. Robinson for Morgan Creek Entertainment.

The executive producers are Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek and Atilla Yucer. Universal Pictures Presents a Blumhouse/Mogan Creek Entertainment production in association with Rough House Pictures.
