He asks his Police Captain Rick (Bo Dietl) to let him use this accidental friendship as an intro to go undercover. Thus begins Bobby’s descent into criminality. He is soon charmed by the life and the feelings of belonging to a family and develops a very flexible relationship with the law. There are many times you think he might tip fully into the illegal lifestyle.

This internal conflict powers most of the dramatic tension in the film and provides a running dialogue told in a seedy voiceover by Hirsch. His ability to voice things with no real discernible moral code gives this cinematic device (which has never been a favourite) the ability to inform without giving too much away.

Based on actual events, Inside Man weaves its story through a morally ambiguous lens where the criminals are not painted one-dimensionally. Their ruthlessness and violent tendencies are there to be seen but so are the moments of camaraderie and friendship. This duality is tilted very much to the repugnant side when the final credits reveal how many of them met an untimely and gruesome end.

Given the popularity and appealing quirkiness of Blumhouse films like Get Out, Happy Death Day and BlacKkKlansman, one would have the initial impression of a certain level of quality but a Wiki investigation of the company’s large and spotty output reveals just the opposite. Unfortunately they have done themselves no favours with their latest production.

The biggest flaw (and there are many) is a weak concept that they constantly dilute by changing the instigator of the fantasy and then never explaining how this evil power actually came to be. The film also has so many false endings that by the time you reach the actual finish, you no longer care.

When a major studio film turns out this bad, you tend to apply a different set of standards to it. Is it so bad it’s funny? Does it have enough absurd moments to make a decent drinking game? Will time prove it to be so bad it becomes a guilty pleasure? Maybe its most egregious misstep is that they didn’t figure out a way to work in the line “The Plane! The Plane!”

Most of the actors on board have connections to well know TV shows and they often remind you of someone else, look there is a poor man’s version of Kate Hudson or a Kardashian, that type of thing. This has the knock on effect of making it a lot more fun when the meet their maker, and no I don’t mean today’s version of Aaron Spelling.

Fans of the shows Pretty Little Liars, Teen Wolf, The Flash and Degrassi: The Next Generation will have fun seeing their fav characters meet a bloody but wholly necessary end. It is however to the film’s credit that these gruesome deaths are more implied than shown, so you can fill in the blanks with your own worrisome details.

The horror genre is a very difficult one to add anything fresh to so the folks behind Truth or Dare don’t even attempt to, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Count this as a guilty pleasure and not much more than that and the film will live up to intended purpose.
