Robert Nesta Marley was born poor on February 6, 1945, in Jamaica and through his music brought worldwide attention to that small Island nation. He knew much turmoil throughout his life, not least the political upheaval that was almost ever-present in his homeland. His pacifist ways supply the most important building block in the period of his life that the film is based around.

After a botched assassination attempt on his life and concerns for the safety of his wife and children, they leave the island and locate overseas where he works on and records his albums Exodus and Kenya. Exodus went on to become one of his largest-selling albums of original material. Marley is intrinsically linked to the music form Reggae and remains its most popular proponent to this day.

People in the West easily overlook the importance of this man and the message of peace he never gave up on. The Marley family’s participation in the film had sanded down a number of the rough edges that existed in his life and the film must be seen more as a celebration than a forensic examination. Rich with the original songs of Bob Marley and the Wailers, One Love focuses on a period of Marley’s career where he was one of the most inspirational musicians on the planet.

Viola Davis is mesmerising as General Nanisca who commands the all-female group of warriors, known as the Agojie, Davis plays the leader with a sense of great strength and resolve. This is tempered by an underlining sense of sadness. As the story progresses we discover the cause of that sorrow.

When Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) a headstrong girl that is given up after her father cannot control her errant ways becomes part of the warrior tribe, she brings the usually stoic Nanisca’s emotions to the forefront. The progression of these feelings are played out in a wonderfully nuanced way.

This is powerful film making that relies on solid story telling and not just the intensity of battle, although there are a number of those moments. It’s anchored around Davis’ Oscar worthy performance and that alone is worth the price of admission. This work is sure to be in many best of the year lists and should not be missed.

The tale this time out is a continuation of the storyline that has underpinned all the Daniel Craig Bond movies. When Casino Royal launched back in 2006, it introduced a much more visceral 007. It began at his inception and featured his first kill. Then throughout successive films, his character weathered huge loss and discord with the realities of his chosen profession.

It’s always been the threat to the world at large that powered his immense sense of King and Country and drove him back into active service. Even the desperate loss of his mother figure M didn’t prevent him from the inescapable call of duty. The stakes are very high this time and even after an almost crippling loss of love he is back and fully committed to stay the course.

There are no films in the entire 007 franchise that feature more ferocious action than No Time To Die and it’s a good thing as the actual story and events that drive the character’s actions are ever so murky. The big bad this time played by Rami Malek is never fully developed as the majority of the focus is placed on Bond’s ultimate fate. Long-time fans will find much to like here though and newbies can just revel in the amazing action pieces, beautiful locations and cool gadgets.
