For long-term fans, you get several unique experiences like seeing number one daughter Tina (Dan Mintz) finally kiss Jimmy Jr. (H. Jon Benjamin) and getting as close as you’ll ever get to seeing youngest daughter Louise (Kristen Schaal) without her bunny ears.

The story revolves around sinkholes, skeletons, over-drawn bank accounts, a live performance by The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee, submarines and Bob (Benjamin again), wife Linda (John Roberts), and customer Teddy (Larry Murphy) taking the burger shop out on a road trip.

For newbies, know that the subversive humour that underlines the regular television show is as present as ever and arrives without resorting to needless profanity. The resultant comedy displays a charm sadly lacking in a lot of adult animated series. The Bob’s Burgers Movie appeal applies to all.

The story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob’s Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belchers’ plans for a successful summer.

While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family’s restaurant. As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong.

First, it must be said that the initial appearance of Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) slightly jars the senses with how old they actually look but that soon plays into the film’s storyline. The movie years have not been kind to the duo and their successes and failures are laid out for all to see.

It’s their daughters this time out that actually become the heroes of the day and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) have engaging energy together that adds a lot to the work. Their attempts to save the day provide the film’s most satisfying elements. When the girls recruit Mozart, Jimi Hendrix, and Duke Ellington for the house band, you know you are on to something sweet.

Bill & Ted Face The Music is unchallenging and borders on being a touch too simple, but it’s also the perfect film to counter these overly complicated times. Groove on Jimi jamming with Wolfie and Duke and pine for the presence of George Carlin, good fun is where you find it, just don’t look too deeply.

There is just not enough to work with here. The characters are written so one dimensionally that even when there is a hint of chemistry nothing becomes of it. Bautista and child actor Chloe Coleman have a few lovely moments together but the momentum is quickly stifled by a series of running gags that just don’t work.

Little is made of the quirky presence of Kristen Schaal as JJ’s partner as she is tethered to a bank of computer screens almost the entire film. There is a subplot of a missing plan for a nuclear weapon that is discussed at the start that sets things into motion but then it’s not mentioned again until the final resolve.

A much better result was available if the characters just saw further development. There were a few relationships that could have evolved into something more interesting if the screenplay just had more gravitas. The few laughs delivered along the way are just no enough to hold things together.

When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment, she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set. In exchange for not blowing JJ’s cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy.

Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.
