One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life.

During these days of isolation, we are rewatching some of our favourite films and running our original reviews, see how well they’ve held up. The first in this series is Snowpiercer and the reviewer this time was the late great Fabulous Sebastian. You are missed my friend.

In 1982 a French graphic novel (that’s the adult term for a comic) postulated a world thrown into an ice age where the remnants of humanity are trapped on a train that never stops. Thirty years later we have an international film (Korean director Bong Joon Ho and ensemble cast) to take us on that ride.

If you thought peak hour trains were bad, wait until you see Snowpiercer. At the back of the train (1001 cars long according to the comic) are the underclass, given barely enough food to survive and used as breeders for the upper-class, who live in luxury at the front of the train, enjoying fresh food and entertainment.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The film details a revolution, where valiant souls from the rear fight their way through the train to find the engineer and the perpetual motion machine that runs the train through the lifeless world.

As viewers, we are inundated with science fiction that goes for effects (Pacific Rim) and/or style (Transcendence) over substance. The best science fiction challenges humanity by placing people in situations out of the normal. The best science fiction is not about the science, or fancy special effects, it is about people.

Snowpiercer does this by creating a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where the train is a microcosm of today’s world. It’s a ride worth taking, but remember to ignore the parts that make no sense (just like you do in the real world). I look forward to The Asylum’s inevitable mockbuster.

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. The film follows the fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John.

This inspirational story – set to Elton John’s most beloved songs and performed by star Taron Egerton – tells the universally relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. ROCKETMAN also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.

Let’s get this out of the way first, Rocketman shares little with the recent biopic sensation Bohemian Rhapsody. It is a grittier look at Elton John’s earlier years and pulls few punches with its depiction of alcohol and drug abuse. It also shows how dysfunctional his early home life was.

Growing up the only child, Reginald Kenneth Dwight was a shy and awkward young child. With a free spirit mother and physically absent father, only his Grandmother was supportive. He took refuge in music and became very accomplished at a young age.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

His early musical endeavours followed a familiar arc, learning the music business from the ground up via a succession of bands and backing gigs. When he started a writing partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, his craft expanded quickly. Their collective work launched John’s popularity into the stratosphere and with great success came great excess.

Filled with great songs and featuring dance number large in scope, Rocketman leans more towards classic musical territory than the current crop of musical biopics. Almost every cast member gets a chance to sing and the dance numbers expand in scope and imagery to match the excess of substance consumption. Not always easy to watch, the film gives a more accurate view than most in its genre.

The last cinematic versions of Fantastic Four were released in 2005 and 2007 respectively and both were very pedestrian affairs. Since then we’ve had numerous very successful (and very good) Marvel adaptations in Iron Man, Captain America, X-Men, The Avengers, The Wolverine, Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. So surely the time is ripe for a decent production of Reed Richard’s crew? Apparently not.

Despite its incredibly successful Marvel brethren, this Fantastic Four is yet another dud, albeit a dud with a $200 million dollar budget.

The story is fantastically linear: we follow genius, Reed Richards, from childhood as he meets each of the characters who we know will become part of the Four as well as the guy we know is destined to be the villain, Victor von Doom (with a name like that, how could he not turn bad?).

Usually in an instance like this the structure of the film would be mixed up, moving the action forward and telling the preceding events in flashback but not here; we’re left to suffer the events in strict, dull, consecutive order. The result being a good hour of plodding character development before we get any glimpse at our pending heroes’ super powers. We’re then pushing an hour and a half before we get to the inevitable battle with Dr Doom – the first (and only) real action set piece. This is a long time to wait for something to happen!

The CGI is mostly on par with what we’d expect these days though Mr Fantastic’s stretchy limbs still don’t seem right somehow. The most noticeable improvement in this incarnation of the franchise is that Thing now looks and sounds like he’s made of rock rather than rubber.

That Fantastic Four was released within weeks of Ant Man suggests a throw-away attitude towards this film from Marvel. An attitude reinforced by a lack of any post credit sequence or Stan Lee cameo (that I could see anyway).

Despite high hopes for this reboot, this remains at the low rent end of the franchise.
