In the summer of 1939, school teacher Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) takes a last minute role teaching English at the Augusta-Victoria College, Bexhill-on-Sea, a finishing school on the south coast of England. Despite the political storm clouds forming across Europe, daughters of influential families in Nazi Germany learn deportment, Shakespeare and how to be faithful members of Hitler’s League of German Girls.

Under the watchful eye of their headmistress Miss Rocholl (Dame Judi Dench), and her devout assistant Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls practice their English and learn how to represent the ideal of German womanhood. Yi and her friends Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai) hit the road together with Everest, the name they give the Yeti after finding out that the world’s tallest peak is his home. As they escape the clutches of Everest’s captors, they are exposed to his magic and learn to share his love for nature.

The life lessons are delivered with a subtle touch and this keeps things from becoming too prosaic. Its entertainment component is accentuated. Abominable is beautiful to look at and charming in execution and should provide a wonderful experience for every member of the family.

But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.

Abominable is written and directed by Jill Culton (Open Season, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2) and is produced by Suzanne Buirgy (Kung Fu Panda 2, Home). Peilin Chou of Pearl Studio also produces. It’s a tangled web that entraps this small group. Ronnie (Emily Taheny) once had a thing with actor Henry (Eddie Izzard) who left her and the town behind but returns five years later with obnoxious French girlfriend Sophie (Vanessa Guide). Ronnie has moved on with Jeff (Luke McKenzie) but has never spoken to him about her time with Henry. Confused? So are they.

Through circumstance they hit the road together on a trip out to the middle of the outback. They hit the sights and a kangaroo or two on the road to nowhere. The humour in the film comes from everyday actions that just miss being normal. There is a delicious tension between the four as they each follow their own agenda during the journey.

The Flip Side is a movie with modest ambitions. It features a message, that most people actually have all they need in life right in front of them by being with the ones that truly love them. This foursome however are so self involved that they hilariously miss even that simple point.

Despite wild declarations of love, as the movie wrapped so did the relationship, crushing Ronnie’s heart. When Henry’s French girlfriend Sophie (Vanessa Guide) calls to say they will be in Adelaide on a promotional tour Jeff excitedly agrees to meet up and unwittingly creates the perfect opportunity for Henry to seduce Ronnie all over again.

Set in the late nineteen hundreds, director Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) uses his actors as both visual and social symbols. Ms Dench’s face often fills the entire screen in extreme close up and both her expressive eyes and her lines of life really sell both her age and emotion. The actual Queen was in her eighties during this time in history.

Ali Faza (Furious 7, Bang Baaja Baaraat ) is perfectly cast as Abdul and he holds his own against the dame. His quiet dignity is in stark contrast to the ever emerging crazy emanating from the Queen’s staff as the two’s relationship blossoms. The members of the royal family and staff are portrayed as almost comic book bad guys.

Few films are made for mature audiences, so when one comes down the pipeline with the quality and emotional impact that Victoria and Abdul posses, it’s one to be both enjoyed and celebrated.

If the narrative sounds familiar that’s because it is. This same basic framework has been used over and over from Fame to Billy Elliot. Substitute the poor kid for a rich kid and you have Dead Poet’s Society; substitute adults for the schoolboy and you have The Full Monty. Boychoir ticks off each obligatory plot point with metronomic predictability offering no new twists to a tired formula. Everything turns out exactly how you’d expect.

The film boasts an impressive cast list including Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates and Eddie Izzard who are all solid performers but are subsisting entirely on their personal charisma here. The music is, as you would expect, divine, so choir junkies will find much to enjoy, others much less so.

While the film is well crafted with some divine music and solid performances, there’s no escaping the reality that we’ve seen this film many times before. It’s agonisingly predictable and if you’ve seen Billy Elliot you’ve seen it already.
