After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.

With a solid foundation via a great script and the right actors for the roles, Daddio will surprise you with how much can be done with just two people in a cab driving into New York City from the airport. Sean Penn as the cabbie has never been better and Dakota Johnson as his passenger shows range and acting chops not seen before.

The set-up is basic as we catch a preoccupied-looking Johnson exiting the airport and grabbing a cab from the rank to transport her back into Manhattan. Behind the wheel is Clark (Penn) a twenty-plus-year veteran of driving people where they want to go. He is a keen observer of the human condition and those decades have not been wasted.

They soon strike up a conversation that will slowly reveal hidden secrets and expose the depths of their internal conflicts. It is fascinating watching, or rather hearing Penn slice through Johnson’s defences with his observations on why people do the things they do. He gets her to reveal herself to him in a way she has never done before.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The strength of the film resides in the words spoken by the actors with such consummate skill. The script is so full of wonderful nuance and drive, it doesn’t waste a single word. By the film’s end, you will feel like you got to know these two people intimately and your world will become better for it. If you love film, you will love this.

As the conventions collect and become dominant, so too does the reliance on special effects. With this much girl power, it seems they should have given these ladies a bigger canvas to paint on. There were many directions and backstories that could have been included to enhance the proceedings.

By the film’s end, it becomes a bit too influenced by the Marvel ethos of having to end with a big bang. This level of bombast while interesting on the surface deprives one of a more engaging experience as these characters could have been expanded into something grand. The excitement is there, just not enough story to go with it.

Maggie Sherwoode (Dakota Johnson) is the personal assistant to ageing diva Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross). This low man on the totem pole position in the music industry is played out with all the trappings, the completely dismissive manager Jack Robertson (Ice Cube), the wacky housekeeper Gail (June Diane Raphael), and all the gilded cage trappings like huge wardrobes, big houses and fast cars.

Maggie is good at her job but dreams of more. She secretly wants to be a record producer and has the musical smarts and sensitivity to do just that. The banter between the players shows that the writer, Flora Greeson has a good working knowledge (or good advisers) of the minutia of soul music and this attention to detail is fun for fans of that genre of music. Her grasp of personal dynamics is less sure.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The musical interactions between players are satisfying and well informed while the characters’ interpersonal actions are often contrived and predictable. It is amusing to wallow in the crazy requests made by Grace to her lowly underling. When Maggie meets David Cliff (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) a singer/songwriter with real talent, the story takes a familiar turn.

The first two acts are entertaining as we get to see deep-seated passions for music in full swing but it struggles to sustain your interest as things progress. With a screenplay that consistently rewards music fans with deep memories, The High Note relies quite heavily on your ability to relate to its rather far fetched final reel.
