Who doesn’t love a good zombie movie? Add in the twang of the Australian outback and you are really on to something. Back in 2014 Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead proved this formula could be good fun and now seven years later we have Wyrmwood: Apocalypse. The duo of Barry (Jay Gallagher) and Brooke (Bianca Bradey) return and continue with their zombie battling ways.
Even as crazy as Road of the Dead was Writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner succeeds in ramping up the lunacy by a large degree. Brooke continues with her zombie whispering ways and Barry is a lone wolf surviving on pills and an expanded collection of gadgets to keep him safe and somewhat zombie-free. The Surgeon (Nicholas Boshier) also returns.
The man in the yellow hazmat suit is still struggling to find a cure while hiding out in an underground bunker. While Barry is keeping him in bodies for his Mengele-like experiments in exchange for the pills that are keeping him going. It’s all pitched at a deranged level of nonsense and as the gore increases so does the amusement factor.
Short and sweet, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse never takes itself too seriously and is a welcome return to just the blood and guts level of zombie behaviour. These are no sensitive flesh-eating cadavers looking to get in touch with their feelings. The entertainment here is just in how far Roache-Turner and the cast can go with a basic premise and lots and lots of attitude.
