Do you have a favourite film you’ve watched a bunch of times, but you’ve never seen it on the big screen? Now is your chance to take a blast to the past with our month of Retro screenings every Thursday at Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema with four retro film favourites.
From the iconic romcom NOTTING HILL and the 80s gem DIRTY DANCING to the Audrey Hepburn classic BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S and the 90s comedy smash CLUELESS, there’s something for everyone on this bill.
Join us from Thursday, 20 March – Thursday 10 April for some retro nostalgia in the picturesque surrounds of New Farm Park right next to the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse and experience Brisbane’s only all year round outdoor cinema.
NOTTING HILL (1999), starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant tells the story of William Thacker a London bookstore owner whose humdrum existence is thrown into romantic turmoil when famous American actress Anna Scott appears in his shop.
A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair. As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love.
Screening Thursday, 20 March
DIRTY DANCING (1987), starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey features one of the most iconic soundtracks, one of the most quoted movie lines and one of the most memorable dance scenes attempted across dancefloors for decades.
Expecting the usual tedium that accompanies a summer in the Catskills with her family, 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is surprised to find herself stepping into the shoes of a professional hoofer—and unexpectedly falling in love.
Screening Thursday, 27 March
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn tells the story of Holly Golightly, an eccentric but beautiful socialite and New York City playgirl determined to marry a Brazilian millionaire. But when young writer Paul Varjak moves into her apartment building, her past threatens to get in their way.
Henry Mancini’s ‘Moon River’, sung by Hepburn in the film went on to win the ACADEMY AWARD® for Best Original Song.
Screening Thursday, 3 April
CLUELESS (1995), starring Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd follows shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Silverstone) who is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale.
Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother was right about how misguided she was — and falls for him.
