Paua will perform in Brisbane and Gold Coast on May 12th and 13th to celebrate the release of their latest single Roots Reggae Woman. Having recently returned from a successful New Zealand tour including the sold-out One Love Festival (20,000+ tickets sold), Paua have hit the studio to record exciting new material. Joining them on stage will be the talented local up-and-coming reggae bands Grounation and ITES who share similarities with Paua in their comprising of mostly New Zealand expats.
“Roots Reggae Woman” explores the narrative of a beautiful and natural love in the style of roots-reggae/lovers rock. The single will be released on May 5th, a week prior to the gigs, through all online outlets.
Residing in Brisbane, Australia, Paua includes Maori heritage hailing from Aotearoa (New Zealand) combined with a multicultural collective of musicians from Australia and Philippines. Although band members grew up in vastly different musical backgrounds, they came together for the mutual love of reggae music. Paua, pronounced Pah-Wa, is the Maori word for Abalone which produce a beautiful iridescent shell.
Many of Paua’s releases have hit #1 on the iTunes reggae charts in Australia, New Zealand and abroad, such as ground breaking 2016 album “Sometimes”, conscious 2015 single “What’s It Gonna Take”, and 2014 single “Loosing My Religion” – a reworking of the REM classic. Smash hit “Coming Home” from the 2011 self-titled debut album has become a household favorite and audiences recite the lyrics word-for-word.
Having shared the stage on proclaimed festivals such as the sold out ‘One Love NZ 2017’, ‘East Coast Vibes’, ‘Ngapuhi Fest’ & ‘One Love 2015 & 2016’ alongside reggae giants such as ‘Steel Pulse’, ‘Black Slate’, ‘Big Mountain’, ‘Julian Marley’, ‘The Green’, ‘Katchafire’, ‘Third World’, ‘Kolohe Kai’ & ‘Tarrus Riley’, Paua are forever enlightening the masses.
As lead singer Jay articulates, “The way we see it is like this; our sound is organic, created from the heart and soul. If you make music from the heart, write words from the soul and give it your all every time you perform, then just maybe others will feel it too. Not talking business, just music.”
