It’s been a very long and tiring year, and one filled with traumatic events. This has been reflected in most of the movies released over the last 360 (and counting) days. Into this world of seriousness enters a project that promises a different approach. One powered by a far more silly and entertaining ideology, Anaconda.
The film plays on the original movie, released all the way back in 1997, to good effect. It even throws in a surprise or two for fans of that unintentional (or not) hilarious work. This reboot follows a very different path, one led by Hollywood funnyman Jack Black and one of the all-time straight sidekicks, Paul Rudd.
This reimagining has the two and their friends, played by Steve Zahn and Thandiwe Newton, travel down south to the jungle to engage in a bout of guerrilla filmmaking. As often happens with these things, it quickly runs off the rails and exposes all the cast and crew to indignities and slapstick situations.
After all the heavy, isn’t it time to end the year with some good, clean and very silly fun? The new Anaconda presents a round of escapist entertainment that is more than needed now and should be appreciated for its effort to raise a smile and maybe even a laugh or two. We really need that this holiday season.
