Simply put, Deadpool is just flat out fun. This irreverent take on the superhero genre has just jump-started a new edition to the elite group of films with a license to print money. The humour hinted at in other superhero flicks is given over to full fruition here and Deadpool with have you rolling in the aisles. Its humour is crass, juvenile, retrograde and just a whole lot of fun.

Ryan Reynolds is the perfect man for the job and his ability to act the class clown and emote even with his face covered in a silly red and black mask is outstanding. He has finally found a role that utilizes all of his talents. Animator Tim Miller makes his directing debut with Deadpool and his sense of pace is spot on. He throws so many jokes and unique ideas your way that the fun doesn’t stop from the hilarious opening credits to the very end crazy credit (don’t miss it).

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

By now most will have seen a trailer or two so no real synopsis is needed to describe the chaos that is afloat here but the thing that does surprise is how well the tender moments are handled. Wade/Deadpool’s relationship with Vanessa played by Morena Baccarin (Homeland, Serenity) comes across as real as they both share the same sense of absurdist humour and disdain for convention. Their onscreen chemistry is intoxicating.

If you fail to find Deadpool funny, it might just be that you are too old, but that’s OK, just work through that temporary roadblock and enjoy what is one of the funniest films of this fresh new year.

In the more than four decades since the release of the film Alien, imaginative monsters from outer space have filled the big screen and scared audiences countless times. Monsters from the deep on the other hand have not garnered quite so many permutations. Underwater attempts to fill that void.

That is does so in such a duplicitous manner speaks more of the originality of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece than it does of director William Eubank’s lack of imagination. The film’s overriding and repetitive flaw is the implausibility of almost all of the scientific details. It demands an almost superhuman suspension of disbelief.

There are more than a few successful jolts to the system as things jump out at you but the murkiness of all of the underwater scenes defuse a great deal on the visual impact. There are also an abundance of moments that attempt to put the slight story in a larger context that seem to be tacked on after the fact.

Building a film around Kristen Stewart is always a risky endeavour as her range is limited to a very few scenarios. Actual scary horror is not one of them. She does however do a remarkable job of keeping her eyeliner intact, even the scariest monster from the deep could do little to smear the sparkly goodness. See Underwater for the few thrills it delivers and know that afterwards deep water with hold no fear.

It was easy getting in touch with the inner child while watching the much maligned Emoji Movie. The jokes connected with both young and old during the screening as the filmmakers included a few subversive moments for the parents to laugh at while their children were otherwise occupied.

The story is the well trodden tale of finding oneself in a busy and not always friendly world. Where things got interesting though is in the transformation of computer terminology and operation into both walking and talking characters with action and purpose.

These actions took clever application and more than a little restraint to keep things in the youth realm. The film sits comfortably in the G rating camp but doesn’t lack a bit of grit in all that candy floss (both visually and thematically).

Being overly critical of this film seems to miss its intent and might point to that assessment being based more on elitism than the actual product. There are large number of kid’s films that shoot far lower than this that have been well received.
