One Life tells the inspiring true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, whose unsung endeavours on the eve of World War II saved more than 600 children from their doom at the hands of the Nazis. Nicky considered himself a banker, not a humanitarian. Yet when he visited a recently annexed Prague in 1938 and saw the state of the fleeing Jewish refugees, he did what he believed was the right thing to do – the thing that anyone would do – and dedicated himself to the cause. War was approaching, and it was a race against time. How many children could he liberate before it ran out?

Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to help. And so it’s not until he’s surprised by the survivors on live television that he can accept that when facing devastating atrocities, saving even one life is a victory, and the British public learn the truth about the hero hidden in their midst. Releasing in Cinemas December 26.

First published in 1815, Jane Austen’s novel Emma was an early century look at the lives of the Woodhouse family. It was the last novel to be completed and published during her lifetime and examined the lives of the rich and privileged. As with Austen’s other works, it was told through the eyes of young women.

Arriving over two decades after Douglas McGrath’s 1996 starring vehicle for Gwyneth Paltrow, this version by director Autumn de Wilde attempts to reintroduce the story to a new generation. It revolves around the life of the young daughter Emma, played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Peaky Blinders and Glass).

She is rich, spoiled and likes to bend the people around her to her will, this includes her somewhat bumbling father played by Bill Nighy. As she experiences a slowly emerging attraction for her neighbour George Knightley (Johnny Flynn), she has to rearrange the people around her to accomplish these goals.

Wealth and entitlement play pretty much the same regardless of the age and Emma is quite an unappealing character at the start of the film. The speech patterns and reserved emotional resonance of the day are also obstacles that need to be overcome. As Emma discovers the depth of her feelings, the changes make her more relatable and the movie more enjoyable. By film’s end you realise you might have misjudged her.

Can damaged people find true love? Beast is a look at love of a different kind. From the ebb and flow of poisonous suspicions to the arresting soundtrack, it is a film that is geared to make you feel anything but comfortable.

Moll (Jessie Buckley) is a girl with a past, one that is never completely explained. Her life is a dull one punctuated by vividly violent nightmares. She soon meets local Pascal (Johnny Flynn) in the small isolated island community they call home and sparks fly.

The film is geared to never letting you off the hook and its creepiness aids in both drawing you in and freaking you out. It establishes both these feelings very well. The story revolves around a series of gruesome murders that have rocked the community. Suspicion is everywhere but it is most intensely focused on Pascal, who has a police record.

This film excels at challenging the viewer to not sit on the sideline and establish a connection with both the characters and their actions. There is depth to be found but you must seek it out. The reward is well worth the effort.
