The all-star ensemble features the voices of Meryl Streep (Insect Queen), Dave Franco (Titus), Kathy Najimy (Dr. Sam), Eduardo Franco (Loaf), Melissa Villaseñor (Ellen), Ego Nwodim (Fish Queen), Vanessa Bayer (Diane), Sam Richardson (Conner), Aparna Nancherla (Nisha), Nichole Sakura (Reptile Queens), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Bird King), Steve Purcell (Amphibian King), Karen Huie (Grandma Tanaka) and Tom Law (Tom Lizard), along with previously announced voice cast members Piper Curda (Mabel), Bobby Moynihan (King George) and Jon Hamm (Mayor Jerry).

“We have assembled a legendary cast for ‘Hoppers,’ and the voice talent really gave the film all they had. Be it uproarious humour, heartfelt emotion or crazy animal noises, they delivered beyond our expectations,” stated director Daniel Chong and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle.

The trailer provides a closer look at the animated comedy adventure which introduces Mabel, an animal lover who seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. Using the technology, Mabel uncovers mysteries within the animal world that are beyond anything she could have imagined.

“Hoppers” features the voice of Bobby Moynihan as King George, an undeniably optimistic, kind and larger-than-life beaver who is the leader of the pond and king of the mammals. Jon Hamm voices Mayor Jerry, a politician running for re-election in Beaverton. Under his shiny, perfectly coiffed hair and matching public persona, Jerry is losing his cool over the one thing he can’t control: Mabel.

“Hoppers” is directed by Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”), produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle (“Incredibles 2”) and features an original score by composer Mark Mothersbaugh (“Thor: Ragnarok”). Coming to cinemas this March.

In the current times when the AI influence in the visual arts has never been more prevalent, the old adage “seeing is believing” has never had less relevance. Amid this, round three of the Now You See Me franchise has hit our screens. The Horsemen have returned this time, and with a few new members. Their nemesis comes from the shady world of diamond cartels.

The opposition is led by Veronika Vanderberg, a South African who runs a diamond company started by her late Nazi father. Their profits now come from laundering money for the criminal elites. She is played with an evil glee by Rosamund Pike. When she gets ready to auction the world’s largest diamond, the group springs into action.

Having broken up over ten years ago after their last big caper, the Four Horsemen are spurred back into action by the individual receipt of a mysterious tarot card. The three newbies arrive via a deep fake show featuring the artificial likenesses of the original four. They are soon integrated into the team and now have a common cause.

As is the case with all the Now You See Me films, you can never believe what transpires on screen until the final reveal, and this approach is fun for all the armchair detectives out there. Your ability to read between the lines and second-guess the actions of all of the cast members will reinforce your fun. Some motives you will see, many you won’t.

Before viewing The Disaster Artist, it helps to know a little bit about a film called The Room. That film consistently rates highly (or lowly) in film geek’s lists of worst movies ever made. It is a riot of bad acting, scattered dialogue and strange plots points that arrive and then disappear, never to be seen again. It has become a cult classic and features prominently on many indie cinemas midnight screening schedule.

Now using one of the most unintentionally funny films of all time as fodder for a film about a film has yielded comic gold. James Franco nails the role of The Room’s creator Tommy Wiseau (minus the middle age creepiness) and has never been more fearless or funny. It’s also a family affair and features his brother Dave as a co-lead actor.

The Room was beyond bad and feels as if it was alien in origin while The Disaster Artist feels Hollywood through and through. From its star laden cameos to the Franco brothers act, they both originated from different worlds but both generate huge laughs. The film also never devolves into snide commentary and treats Tommy Wiseau fairly.

Don’t worry if you are yet to see The Room as at film’s end there are some side by side scene comparison that put the current crazy in context to the fractured past. The Disaster Artist is a blast and should not be missed.

Transforming a popular TV show into a mainstream movie is very seldom a successful endeavour. The DVD shelfs are littered with budget priced discs from failed projects. Into this battle field of underachievers comes 21 Jump Street and counter to all the failures that have come before it, it’s both entertaining and funny.

How this happened is no real mystery. First it must be said that out of the ten or so people I spoke to before the screening, none had actually seen even a single episode of the eighties era television show, so the slate seems to be clean for a new interpretation with no baggage of having to adhere to fans that know every nuance of the original. The film also steers firmly into the direction of parody and as such takes as many swipes at eighties era society as it does the television of the time.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The casting is contemporarily comic and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are well cast as Tweedledee and Tweedledumber. The comedy often times veers dangerously close to being cringe worthy but as is the want of films of this type, it throws so many jokes and comic set ups your way that eventually they start to strike the mark. The camaraderie of the two leads is also engaging.

With so many films getting the green light because of a tie in with an existing audience (i.e. remakes and the comic book hero genre) it’s interesting that a film got made about a show that not a lot of people seem that interested in. Without the subsequent high profile career of the originals show’s main actor, it would seem 21 Jump Street would have been relegated to the scrap heap of TV history but instead it has been given life into a new millennium.
