Starting with the opening notes of Lou Reed’s seditious Walk On The Wild Side that morphs into a rap song, Tom & Jerry is often more subversive than its surface would lead you to believe. The mix of animation and live-action gives the filmmakers the chance to get away with some serious digressions under the guise of appearing like a kid’s film.

Animated shenanigans include things like faking blindness to help revenue while panhandling, squatting held as a virtue, wanton property destruction, ethnic stereotyping, and the classic Saturday morning cartoon portrayal of excessive violence as comic fodder. Good clean comedy for those surfing the sugar rush of morning breakfast cereal.

Homo sapien actor-wise, Chloë Grace Moretz plays a great shill and her surface of nauseating niceness is the perfect cover for her opportunistic scheming. Elsewhere the humans get to act more cartoon-like than the CGI characters with Michael Peña leading the way as the pretentious manager of the Royal Gate Hotel who eventually gets his just desserts.

Seen only on the surface, Tom & Jerry is so riddled with cliches, it becomes quite amusing to see how many it can pack in before the final credits roll. Its misguided mayhem helps to illustrate just how far the PC police have come with live-action but how much of a pass animation gets in this regard. South Park, Big Mouth, and Bojack Horseman, I’m looking at you.

In the throes of World War II, Captain Maude Garrett (Chloë Grace Moretz) joins the all-male crew of a B-17 bomber with a top-secret package. Caught off guard by the presence of a woman on a military flight, the crew tests Maude’s every move. Just as her quick wit is winning them over, strange happenings and holes in her backstory incite paranoia surrounding her true mission.

There are strange things afoot with the new animated reboot of The Addams Family franchise. It’s almost an origin story and starts before Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) have their children Wednesday (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Pugsley (Finn Wolfhard). They are forced from their homeland and end up settling in that horror of horrors, New Jersey.

The film is filled with imaginative moments like Thing (the hand with no body) watching appendage porn on his laptop and the butler Lurch (Conrad Vernon) tickling the ivories and belting out the R.E.M. song Everybody Hurts. One strange part is that most of the tidbits of clever are tailored to an audience a generation (or two) older than the current crop of youngsters.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The story as it is involves the art of being yourself and not following the norm and that message is delivered in a number of somewhat abnormal ways. This involves details like having hidden cameras in people’s bathrooms and cat fishing the townspeople on their social media feeds.

Given the film’s mixed reception, it offered a surprisingly high level of entertainment. It is also consistent in presenting those moments that make you feel clever for knowing the context and reference of its humour. It’s creepy, kooky and clever.

Big cities can be impersonal and isolating and cause people to do some very strange things. Nowhere is the axiom made more apparent than in writer/director Neil Jordan’s new film, Greta. Going against the grain and casting the ever elegant Isabelle Huppert as the main source of mental distress is a master stroke.

When the handbag’s owner extends the hand of friendship, Frances’ fragile state of mind prevents her from seeing the danger signs and she takes up the offer without a second thought. They grow close quickly and all seems idilic until a reveal changes things dramatically.

The film’s short running time (98 minutes) doesn’t prevent it from getting under your skin and bathing you in a thick layer of creepy. There are millions of stories in a city as large as New York and Greta provides one that will give you caution and a sense of dread.

There are horror films that scare you and ones that just creep you out, Suspiria is firmly in the later camp. It’s a work that does its best to put you in discomfort and in that pursuit it succeeds magnificently. Director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) keeps you off balance throughout its 152 minute running time.

A talented young dancer, Susie Bannion played by Dakota Johnson joins a prestigious dance company in West Berlin in the late seventies and comes under the spell of the company’s leader, Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton). Little does Bannion know that the coven of witches that run the school will drive her to the edge of insanity and beyond.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Guadagnino uses an approach where you are never quite sure where the reality of the character’s lives stop and the evil that exists within the walls of the school start. There are very few literal scenes and through the haze of this presentation you are often left to find your own reality.

Reimagining Dario Argento’s popular 1977 Italian horror film of the same name was always going to present a challenge, but it’s challenge met. From Guadagnino’s hallucinogenic vision to Radiohead’s Thom Yorke’s unearthly yet beautiful soundtrack to cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom cryptic vision, it’s a work unique onto itself.

Academy Award nominee Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) directs an unsettling and thoroughly original take on the 1977 cult horror classic Suspiria, with a haunting soundtrack from Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.

Young American dancer Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson) arrives in 1970s Berlin to audition for the world-renowned Helena Markos Dance Company, stunning the troupe’s famed choreographer, Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton), with her raw talent. When she vaults to the role of lead dancer, Olga, the previous lead, breaks down and accuses the company’s female directors of being witches.

As rehearsals intensify for the final performance of the company’s signature piece, Susie and Madame Blanc grow strangely close, suggesting that Susie’s purpose in the company goes beyond merely dancing. Meanwhile, an inquisitive psychotherapist trying to uncover the company’s dark secrets enlists the help of another dancer (Chloë Grace Moretz), who probes the depths of the studio’s hidden chambers.

SUSPIRIA releases November 8th – see it a week early at the Dendy with spooky drink on arrival on Halloween, Oct 31st!
