In My Blood It Runs Movie Review

He is wise beyond his years but is caught between two worlds. Inside his Aboriginal roots run deep and he reacts poorly to being directed into a western education. This forced narrative is brought to its full and insidious light with a scene where he is taught about Captain Cook claiming all of Australia for the British.   //   Mixing news footage of the protests around the country to secure indigenous rights and the human right violations perpetrated on juveniles while ...

Richard Jewell Movie Review

Jewell was the security guard who was falsely accused of the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, Georgia. The FBI in a rush to solve the case came up with a profile and then twisted the facts to fit their created scenario. And even though Jewell was never formally charged, the media picked up on the story and he was tried, convicted and sentenced in the press.   //   Eastwood’s direction is even handed and Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya and BlacKkKlansman) delivers ...

Seberg Movie Review

Her affiliation and financial support of the Black Panthers and other civil rights groups riled the agency and they set out to discredit her and ruin her reputation. They used illegal and amoral means to this end and in so doing had a dramatic effect on Seberg’s life. From the pressure, she later attempted suicide and suffered a miscarriage.   //   Never fully recovering from this period of her life, she suffered from declining mental health until she eventually died ...

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Movie Review

This is also true with famous or unknown faces attached to the project. If the story resonates on a personal level, it can have a dramatic effect, so the feelings while watching A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood utterly surprised me. Intentionally going in with as little knowledge about the film as possible, the emotional effect was potent.   //   Being estranged from my father most of my adult life and having no final closure before his death made watching this film ...

Just Mercy Movie Review

It’s interesting to note that the main impact of the film comes more from the story than from the actor’s overwrought emotions. Michael B. Jordan as civil rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson and Foxx play their characters with a believable sense of restraint. Lawyers, especially, are taught to keep their emotions in check and Jordan resists the chance to show off acting chops to the detriment of the realism that is at play.   //   Some will feel that more thespian intent...

Bombshell Movie Review

Bombshell shines a light on one of these stories, in the case, it’s the detestable behaviours that took place at Fox News under the leadership of serial abuser Roger Alies, played here with suitable repulsiveness by actor John Lithgow. He is a repugnant man in every way but his ability to make millions of dollars for his overlords keep him in power for way too long. A few brave women came forward and ended his reign.   //   The main women in this action are played by ...

True History of the Kelly Gang Movie Review

The film’s title is quite the misnomer as this is a highly stylised account of Ned Kelly and his family. Some of the creative choices yield engrossing scenes while others feel forced and dissipate momentum. This includes not capitalising on the acting of Nicholas Hoult who persuasively plays against his nice guy persona as the sadistic Constable Fitzpatrick. Odd that the chemistry between him and George MacKay’s Ned Kelly is so under-utilised.   //   Their scenes ...
