Into this new paradigm, can there still be the possibility of an actual sense of anticipation for a major theatrical release? With so many tent pole movies on hold and with so much time on our hands, that kind of diversion is very much needed. Into this void of excitement comes the release (on video platforms) of The Hunt.

This tale of what came first, the chicken or the egg is an ideal project for the times. It will create dialogue and opinions and fill a much needed gap in new film releases. Seen as social commentary it is cutting, as entertainment, outrageous and as feminist propaganda, empowering. It does all this and still remains escapist especially in these isolationist times.

The idea of hunting humans for sport has been visited many times before on the big screen but never have the motivations for the hunt be so topical or timely. The current technology that allows our version of social media to have such power and create such pitfalls is very much of today. Its impact on the gestations of events in The Hunt is dramatic.

Seen at home on our brilliant big screens with their voluminous sound systems, The Hunt lacks nothing in visual or audio impact and with our almost insatiable appetite for bigger and better thrills, the timing couldn’t be any better. The enjoyment of the new is intoxicating and one that as things drag on will become more and more important. Good on Universal for not making us wait any longer.

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

From Jason Blum, the producer of Get Out and The Purge series, and Damon Lindelof, creator of the HBO series Watchmen and co-creator of the TV series Lost, comes a timely and provocative new satirical thriller that has already ignited a national conversation. Now, it’s time to decide for yourself.

The Hunt is written by Lindelof and his fellow Watchmen collaborator Nick Cuse and is directed by Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah, The Leftovers). Blum produces for his Blumhouse Productions alongside Lindelof. The film is executive produced by Zobel, Cuse and Steven R. Molen.

The Hunt will be released in Australian cinemas this April!

What does it take to scare a modern audience? Is it even possible to provide enough jolts to the system to get the job done. The Grudge takes an interesting but simple premise and attempts to ramp up the scare tactics enough to get through to a group of horror film aficionados that have been oversaturated by stimuli.

The film shares a storyline with the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge and the 2004 America remake of the same name. At its most basic, it’s based on a house that becomes attached to and haunts all those that enter it. This time there are individuals whose connection only become apparent as things progress.

Not short of star power, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Jacki Weaver are just a few of the actors involved. Andrea Riseborough plays the lead character Detective Muldoon and she tries hard to hit most of the right notes to build the terror. The movie’s structure limits what she can do.

Building a scary experience on things jumping out of the darkness at you and drilling your ears with crescendo after crescendo of eerie sound design only takes you so far. After that there is a need for the story telling to buttress those feeling of unease. The Grudge succeeds at establishing an unsettling feeling but falls short of delivering the big scare.

Looks like there is life left in the Buddy Cop film after all. Stuber doesn’t try to be something it is not but succeeds quite well at being what it is. It provides a rousing good time with lots of laughs and the ability for you to forget your troubles for the entirety of its economical 93 minute running time.

Stuber is Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) a mild mannered chap who drives an Uber as a second job. His OCD world is turned upside down when he has to drive Vic (Dave Bautista). Vic is an alpha male cop still ruing the loss of a partner and obsessing over finding their murderer.

Stu as the fish out of water plays a great straight man to Vic’s over the top cop tendencies and most of the humour comes out of their developing relationship. There is very little story to get in the way of the fun and that’s fine when the percentage of gags that work is so high.

The movie is quite adept at producing the kind of easy escape that only the cinema can provide. Sitting in the dark with fellow film goers and laughing uproariously while munching on empty calories and just enjoying yourself. Add Stuber to the short list of guaranteed good time films.
