Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Aquaman” has stormed the box office, taking in more than $1 billion worldwide in just over one month since it reigned supreme in its first market, China. The announcement was made today by Ron Sanders, President of Worldwide Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures Group and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

“We’re thrilled audiences around the world have embraced ‘Aquaman’ in such a big, big way,” said Sanders. “Jason, the filmmakers and the team at DC have delivered a film that people love, and we are so appreciative of their support.”

Wan stated, “Firstly, Massive LOVE and THANK YOU to the fans and audiences around the world. Humbled by the way you’ve embraced ‘Aquaman’ and how it has resonated on a global scale. I’ll forever be indebted to Jason for turning Aquaman into one of the coolest, cinematic Super Heroes ever, and becoming the gold standard for this character for generations to come. Huge thank you to the amazing cast—Amber, Patrick, Nicole, Yahya, Willem, Temuera, Dolph, Ludi—for breathing life into our beloved characters. And, of course, this movie wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible achievement of everyone involved, from the heads of department to every single crew member, who demanded utmost excellence in helping design and create this cinematic experience.”

In addition to crossing the billion-dollar mark, this weekend “Aquaman,” at $1.02 billion and counting, is now the #2 DC film ever worldwide, behind only “The Dark Knight Rises,” which took in $1.08 billion in its run. “Aquaman” has taken in $287.9 million domestically, and is now also the 2nd highest grossing Warner Bros. film of all time internationally, with $732.4 million to date; the biggest DC film of all time internationally; and the highest grossing Warner Bros. film ever in China, with $287.3 million.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes “Aquaman,” the origin story of half-surface dweller, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry that takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king. The action-packed adventure spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, and stars Jason Momoa in the title role.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ first-ever Aquaman standalone feature is making huge waves at the box office, coming in at #1 and taking in an incredible $3,795,000 in its opening day in Australia.

The epic action adventure, directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa in the title role, opened on approximately 635 screens on Boxing Day. The results marked the highest DC universe opening and the highest opening day for a Warner Bros. Pictures’ film in 2018 in Australia.

Joel Pearlman, Co-CEO of Roadshow Films stated, “The Boxing Day results prove that Aquaman is king of the box office as well as the seven seas. We are thrilled with these extraordinary numbers, and equally excited to see audiences comprised of movie fans, DC aficionados, and families filling the cinemas this holiday season. We anticipate strong word of mouth will carry these terrific results well into the New Year.”

Setting the yardstick higher and higher every year for what constitutes a modern day blockbuster has led to some amazing looking movies. The visual arts have never be more spectacular looking on-screen. James Wan’s (Furious 7 and The Conjuring) take on the DC character Aquaman puts spectacle before story and does his cast and the film a disservice.

Jason Momoa as the title character oozes charisma on-screen but he is left with little to do except spout the occasional one-liner. For an origin story the film oddly starts wth Momoa as a fully grown man and a fully realised superhero and then throughout the film, his backstory and how he became a man is given very little screen time.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

There is however a wonderful scene early on where he and his father payed by Temuera Morrison go out drinking together. It’s funny, touching and pokes fun at the reality of being a superhero but it’s an island in the middle of a sea of CGI fight scenes. Fight scenes with so much visual information they become overwhelming by film’s end.

As spectacle, Aquaman more than delivers what is expected and Momoa’s physical presence and size makes for some very exciting fight scenes as does his smart ass persona. It all just feels that with a better developed story that the film could have been something so much more.

Sometimes bigger is better. Having most of the main DC heroes in one film works out quite well in Justice League. The somewhat dour mood of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been lifted with this ensemble piece where humour is never that far away. Having The Flash provide the wide eyed wonder and dropping the funny lines lifts the entire film, even Ben Affleck is starting to satisfactorily inhabit the Batman role.

Elsewhere, Jason Momoa is actually able to make the Aquaman character seem cool and fast forwarding Wonder Woman’s arc allows Gal Gadot to act more naturally. It’s still at heart a comic book movie and this finds everything in overdrive, even the final battle is so over the top as to defy description. The CGI graphics are more moody and less photorealistic than other franchises and this gives the film its own look and feel.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

One of the few minor letdowns is in the character of the Big Bad and without giving away too much, they are just a bit too generic. The balance between the recruitment and formation of the Justice League is finely sequenced but the final reel and its big battle is the film’s least successful element.

Also be warned DC has now fully jumped on the Marvel bandwagon and make sure to stay until the very end so as not to miss the coda at the end of the credits.
