We can however rely on a kung fu fighting robot to save the day and have Director/writer Gerard Johnstone and his cohorts throw absolutely everything in the pot in an attempt to entertain us. Sensory overload or the proper proportion of mayhem for the ADD generation? Only you can decide.

The storyline as convoluted as it is revolves around the original M3GAN robot not really being completely destroyed and her CPU or central processing unit still existing in one form or another. From this point forward none of it really makes any sense, so you are forced to just go along with this occasionally bumpy ride.

When all is said and done and the crazy coagulates in your grey matter, you are left with quite a few what the f moments. Getting there has its fun moments but the lasting impression is that the possible evil that exists in movie madmen in regards to world domination has resulted in more hilarity than hazard.

With the advances happening every day with artificial intelligence, having things go horribly wrong is an arresting scenario and one used here to maximise audience discomfort. And in line with the universal satisfaction of seeing the most deserving of victims get theirs first, it also doesn’t disappoint.

Gemma (Allison Williams) is a master of robotics and AI who works for a toy company. When the overworked employee is left in charge of the care of her sister’s daughter after an accident claims the lives of both parents, she invents M3GAN to help her look after the child.

Rushing the robot into production is a fatal flaw as no real safeguards are applied to the parameters of the operating system. A plot device used before but one especially relevant in today’s quest for even more convenient products that feature microchip processors. It opens a whole new world of potential horrors. The story revolves around leaving the big city and going out to the country to meet the girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Along the way it touches on issues as diverse as rich white privilege, social injustice, true friendship and how often times people are completely different than the first impression would lead you to believe.

The direction is assured and important elements of the story arrive with perfect timing. For a first time director, this level of intent is very impressive. It’s the kind of story that will resonate with a large segment of the movie going public and reward them with a lasting experience.

It’s hard to review a film that relies on suspense as one of its key elements and not give too much away so I’ll end with this one last comment: Rich white folks be crazy!
