After the surprise success of the original John Wick, it was inevitable that a sequel would be on the cards and three years later we witness the arrival of the follow up, inventively titled John Wick: Chapter 2. This latest edition of Hollywood Murder Porn lacks some of the charm of original but surpasses it in both body count and visceral violence.

Keanu Reeves still nails the role and having someone with limited acting chops playing the role of the proverbially ‘talk softly and carry a big stick’ kind of guy works towards the film’s success. He also has another dog this time and it’s to the film’s credit that the pouch makes it to the end credits alive.

The film picks up shortly after the moment where part one left off (four days to be exact) and the two would make a great side by side movie marathon, if you can handle that much blood shed. All of the important living characters have returned and Ian McShane and John Leguizamo reprise their roles from the originall and are a more than welcome addition.

It must be said however that enjoying the film was hampered by the theatre’s sound system that delivered one of the most over the top loud and horrendously shrill sonic experiences ever endured in the cinema. It really was too much.

Is there anything that Jason Statham can’t do? Make the world safe from a thirty metre long shark that is threatening the high seas, no problem. Drink copious quantities of beer while chilling on a beach in Thailand, done. Save the atrocious dialogue in The Meg from being laugh out loud funny? Well maybe there are things that are just that step too far.

A research station located in the middle of the ocean houses a crew that find a new area that is even deeper than the Mariana Trench. During their exploration they unknowingly unleash some new horrors from the depths. When things get out of hand and they have no one to turn to, they dial up good old JS to save the day.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

To say that the dialogue lets down the side of this work is to miss the film’s intension. It plays out as more of a comedy than an updated version of the scare classic Jaws and in that pursuit it scores quite a number of bullseyes. When it misses though, it misses big.

When the chips are down, really down and everyone you thought was going to end up being gobbled up by the behemoth is part of its digestive tract, it’s time for Statham to unleash his big guns. So between JS and multiple rolls of duct tape, the high seas are once again safe for the living things both big and small that reside in the water.

Setting the silly storyline aside and the hilariously bad Australian accent compliments of new cast member John Lithgow, Pitch Perfect 3 closes out the franchise in fine fashion. This version sidesteps the problems of version 2 by ramping up the musical numbers and placing more focus on the joys of music, it’s a welcome direction.

Most all of the female cast members are back and even though it was rumoured to have become a Rebel Wilson vanity project, the end results show a good balance between characters. They also do a bit of globe trotting and the cities they visit add to the visual appeal.

The script, while firmly set in a world of non-reality still delivers quite a number of very funny one liners and the overriding message of sisterhood is delivered with a surprisingly light touch. Having the girls share the stage with a number of conventional bands (who play with musical instruments) also adds musical variety.

The 93 minute film while never taxing the grey matter also doesn’t overstay its welcome. Amid the over abundance of big brand action films this holiday season, it’s nice to have a film based on human interaction that is not without its charms.
