Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

Hugh Jackman is the shepherd George Hardy, who loves his herd almost too much and dislikes almost all humans. His love is so strong that he has given them all names and treats them like his children. He even reads to them nightly from his collection of detective novels. While the sheep can converse with each other, the humans only hear the baas.

When George meets an early and untimely end and the police prove incompetent, the sheep have to pitch in and help the authorities. As the investigation expands, you learn more and more about the reclusive shepherd. The human characters are very by-the-numbers, but the mammals’ personalities are much richer.

You would have to be quite cold of heart not to let a little bit of sunshine in with The Sheep Detectives. Its life lessons are worthy of being told, and the human element supports the narrative quite well, if even a little bit one-dimensional. This should prove to be engaging and entertaining to all the members of an open-minded family.

The underwater worry this time is Bob’s desire to become a big guy so he can ride a roller coaster at a local amusement park. When he grows to the required height and is admitted onto the ride, his bravery leaves him and sends him on a quest to become a swashbuckler. Even though these are well-trodden lanes, it’s still presented with such innocence that the appeal endures.

As the journey progresses, we meet a progression of weird and wonderful characters, even the bad guy, in this case, the Flying Dutchman (Mark Hamill), is presented as a somewhat friendly foe. Relying on an impressive colour palette and an outlandish sense of presentation, the journey is never less than fun.

Filled with lysergic laughter and more than a few ribald moments, The SpongeBob world is one of inclusion and the relationships presented are based on acceptance and not being afraid of being yourself. With the current reality being about as bleak as memory serves, trading that for a cartoon land filled with humour, laughs, and love sounds like time well spent.

There are prestige gigs in the acting game, and being part of a Paul Thomas Anderson film must rate high on that list. His filmography is impressive, as is the list of amazing actors who have worked with him. His newest film, One Battle After Another, illustrates that he has lost none of his considerable powers and that he continues to set his sights on having a relevance to the world at large. 

The story that underlies One Battle After Another is the extreme actions that governments (and the clandestine groups behind them) will resort to to ensure that their vision for the world is the dominant one. The overview is of the firebrands that fuelled opposition to the status quo and were unafraid to use any means necessary to restore their version of a fair and equal society.

There are a few things to consider with the amazing performances by lead actors Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio. You have to admire the moment when Penn read the script for his absolutely repugnant character, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw and thought, yeah, I’m in. DiCaprio as well for taking the risk with his lost stoner father figure, who eventually rises to the occasion. Their faith in PTA being absolute.

This perfectly paced thrill ride of a movie utilises two of the current best, DiCaprio and Penn, at a zenith moment of their careers. Paul Thomas Anderson has never been better, and his choice of subject matter has never been more relevant and needed as well. This is a work that comfortably resides amongst his other stand out works, yes, it’s that good.

What starts as an examination of a lonely under-appreciated housewife named Sue Buttons played by the always interesting Allison Janney soon turns into something very different. Sue feels so powerless that when an opportunity to become the centre of attention comes her way, she will leave common sense and morality far behind.

The comments on the media and its way of manipulating viewers’ emotions are razor-sharp but they are buried deep in the heart of a screwball comedy. A work that feels so unfocused at times and so random that you marvel at its lack of cohesion. Releasing you from a sense of expectation becomes its charm.

Breaking News In Yuba County will split audiences and requires a very dark sense of humour to get on its wavelength. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. With the ever-expanding number of takes on the comic genre, this crowded field needs a dark gem to challenge what’s considered funny. This is a work that will take time to find its audience.
