There is a fine art to turning a bad television show into an entertaining movie. McG did it back in 2000 and now Elizabeth Banks puts her stamp on the latest edition. As screenplay writer and director, Banks brings the franchise fully up to date. With current music, fashion trends and three fresh faces, it’s all very much on trend.

The film works hard at establishing Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the new angels and their varied ethnic backgrounds make for a refreshing change. The three start as somewhat strangers and time is taken to build their friendship through a plethora of unbelievable scenarios. They get beat up, shot at, blow up, drugged and still have perfect hair.

Recreating predictable harm in various exotic locations from around the globe helps to keep the script alive as its storytelling elements are quite minor. But then it’s not really that kind of movie. Its energy and entertainment value lie in its flashy presentation and absolute modernity.

Charlie’s Angels is a none too serious blast of lady-centric exuberance and seen for what it is, provides 118 minutes of pure escapism. With so many films being made just for the dudes, it’s commendable to have a work like this to help balance things out a bit.

When Charlie’s Angels hits cinemas this November – for the first time in the entire history of the franchise, films and television, directed by a woman, Elizabeth Banks – the new Angels will move to the beat of Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey as Republic Records and Sony Pictures Entertainment release their song “Don’t Call Me Angel (Charlie’s Angels)” and the song’s official music vide
o.

The track, which features co-writing credits from all three of the artists, was recently featured in the film’s trailer and is the lead single from the upcoming Charlie’s Angels (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). The soundtrack is co-executive produced by Ariana Grande, Savan Kotecha, and Scooter Braun and will be available November 1, 2019 via Republic Records, two weeks prior to the film’s November 14, 2019 release.

Director Elizabeth Banks stated, “It was important to me to kick off Charlie’s Angels with a huge female-powered anthem driven by a big voice – but to get three of the biggest voices out there? It’s a dream come true! What Ariana, Miley and Lana have delivered surpasses even my high expectations. Their song is resonant and meaningful, and it kicks major ass.”

“Don’t Call Me Angel (Charlie’s Angels)” features three of the best voices in music who have joined forces to deliver this undeniably empowering, female-focused collaboration. “Don’t Call Me Angel (Charlie’s Angels)” is written by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Alma-Sofia Miettinen. Producers are Max Martin & ILYA for Max Martin Productions. The song was first teased in the movie’s official worldwide trailer earlier this year to a flood of speculation and excitement amongst media and fans.

Charlie’s Angels will be released in Australian cinemas November 14.

Having grown up loving the Disney animated film, The Sword in the Stone, it was a blast to get in touch with my inner child again while watching the new live action film The Kid Who Would Be King. Revisiting the fantasy world of King Arthur, Merlin, the Knights of the round table and the famous sword Excalibur brought back some great memories.

The story has been brought up to date and set in modern times but cleverly succeeds in keeping the old mythology alive. This even includes a very comic take on Merlin the wizard played by two actors, the regal Patrick Stewart playing against type and Angus Imrie, playing him as the school geek extraordinaire. Both versions are very funny.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The believe in yourself message is delivered with little subtlety but it is satisfying nonetheless seeing the school nerd Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) becoming the hero of the day. Watching the transformation of Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris) from class bullies into noble Knights is also enjoyable.

The take away messages are delivered with a heavy handed touch but this can be forgiven because this is a proper big screen, big adventure film and never falls below entertaining. Just a small warning though, some of the imagery, especially that of the big evil Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) might be a bit too intense for the very young ones.

Set in the future where mutants have all but been eradicated, an aging and ailing Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is shacked up with a mentally debilitated, nonagenarian Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and mutant tracker, Caliban (Stephen Merchant) in remote, desolate Mexico – the last of their kind, apparently. That is until 10 year-old Laura (Dafne Keen) enters the picture with abilities that are remarkably like the Wolverine’s. Cue another nefarious government plot to genetically engineer and control mutantkind.

The great thing about the Wolverine spin off films is that they’re more humanist drama/action movies than they are traditional comic book adaptations. This applies even to the much-derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They represent a maturation of the comic book films that are freer to explore other genres outside the literally derived, primary-coloured storyboard format.

James Mangold’s two Wolverine films – this one and its predecessor, The Wolverine – are a particular case in point. Absent are the ridiculous spandex suits which would be more at place in Strictly Ballroom, and in their place are civilian clothes, gritty drama, bloody violence and even (gasp) boobs! The gratuitous brutality and potty-mouth language are more at home in a Tarantino flick than an X-Men movie and that’s not where the comparisons with Tarantino end. Interestingly, Mangold’s films share much with Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 with his first Wolverine film being an ‘Eastern’ (samurai/kung fu) and his second, a Western featuring our favourite grumpy lone wolf bladeslinger reluctantly defending those in need. Indeed Mangold even goes so far as to explicitly cite the Western classic, Shane, as if to drive home the reference. This does, however, make these two films an admirably unique duo within the Marvel film canon.

Both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart have publicly confirmed their departure from the X-Men franchise with this film and Logan is a good one to go out on. Largely casting off the shackles which usually restrict seasoned thespians in these types of roles, both have the freedom here to explore the idiosyncratic minutiae of their respective characters, allowing them to shine as performers like no other Marvel film before it. And we know from Jackman and Stewart’s performances elsewhere that they are certainly up to this task.

The other standout is young Dafne Keen who gives a performance reminiscent of Natalie Portman in Leon. While she may not say much, it is a fine internalised performance with much depth. There’s a future career to look out for.

There remains a couple of major plot point omissions (continuity errors, perhaps?) such as how on earth did Wolverine get his adamantium claws back after they were so dramatically excised in the previous solo film? And there still hasn’t been a straightforward explanation as to how Xavier returned from being obliterated by Jean Grey in X-Men 3: The Last Stand. (Yes, I know they implanted his mind in another body – but the same crippled body…?) Given that these are two major features of the story arc, it’s amazing that Mangold manages to get away with it. But it’s a measure of his overall level of quality that we can so easily turn a blind eye to these seeming blatant oversights.
