Often times disturbing, this unflinching film examines the human cost of a practice called ‘Framing’. This was an accepted practice in the seventies among Nigerian families. Parents would send their young children to live in England with white foster parents hoping that their children would have a better life.

This often times led to disillusion and alienation as some of the children never felt fully immersed in either culture. Some of the foster homes were also far from perfect environments and racial prejudice was rampant at that time and greatly added to the internal unrest.

The film is loosely based on writer/director Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s actual childhood and it tells a horrifying tale about his early years. It also presents a challenge to the audience to believe and sympathise with a story almost too incredible to believe. It’s more than a harrowing experience.

The young child Enitan (Damson Idris), a quiet and introspective child is so traumatised and yearns to fit in so badly, when he hits his teen years he joins a skin-head group lead by a white supremacist. It’s difficult to see this scenario happening in real life but it’s easy to feel how damaged he is. Sometime life truly is stranger than fiction.

Underworld: Blood Wars follows on from Underworld: Awakening which opened up the ongoing Vampire\Lycan war to the wider human world and introduced the daughter of our vamp heroine, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), and Vampire\Lycan hybrid beau, Michael Corvin. In this new entry to a franchise that has been running for 13 years now, Selene must protect her daughter from new Lycan villain, Marius (Tobias Menzies), who requires the hybrid sprog’s blood for his nefarious, master plan.

The film fan in me loves the Underworld movies whilst the film critic in me says, “Why on earth do you subject yourself to this nonsense?” Yes, it’s easy to be critical of this franchise but the truth is I have a soft spot for Vampires and Werewolves combined with action violence, and a somewhat less soft spot for Kate Beckinsale in heels, skin-tight black vinyl and twin fully automatic pistols.

The plot is strictly by the numbers and the horror quotient is probably lower than it’s ever been in this series (bar, perhaps, one or two moments) but the fantasy action keeps things interesting enough. Some stunning continuity errors mean you probably shouldn’t follow the proceedings too closely but rather just enjoy the ride.

In the end, Underworld: Blood Wars is an average entry into an increasingly tired franchise (which isn’t done yet!) and is really just a stopgap for its existing fan base.

Thanks to Transmission Films we have five double in season passes to give away to Love & Friendship.

Starring Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Tom Bennebt, and Australian Xavier Samuel in his first romantic lead role, Love & Friendship is an adaptation of young Jane Austen’s novella, Lady Susan. Set in the 1790’s, earlier than most Austen novels, Love & Friendship concerns beautiful young widow Susan Vernon who has come to Churchill, the estate of her in-laws, to wait out colourful rumours about her dalliances circulating through polite society.

Love & Friendship is witty, with wickedly humorous quick fire dialogue providing refreshing appeal to this beautiful costume drama, with all the things you would expect from an Austen adaptation; romance, beautiful period costumes and settings, as well as plenty of gossip and drama.
