Good films are usually comprised of one or more of these components: an excellent story, an engaging script, and standout performances by one or more of the cast members. On the very rare occasion, the stars align and a film can combine all three. When this happens, it can lead to a startling effect.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and writers Will Tracy and Jang Joon-hwan have combined their skills in the creation of Bugonia, and the end result is the creation of an outlier work. Its ability to transform itself and the audience’s expectation time and time again is quite something to behold.

With a brilliantly deranged performance by Jesse Plemons and an equally assertive one by Emma Stone, this is indeed a rare work. Those three virtues mentioned above come together so seamlessly that it heralds a work that demands your attention and pays dividends to those with a taste for the adventurous.

Difficult to categorise in the best possible way and challenging to digest depending on your own sensibilities, Bugonia is a film not to be missed. View it as an exception to the norm and marvel at both its manic energy and bold disregard for type.

Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as his hides.

The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly he drives them both to tears, reveling in their hurt and rousing his fellow cowhands to laughter – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose then returns to marry her.

As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his taunting of Rose takes an eerie form – he hovers at the edges of her vision, whistling a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheering of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace?

With previous film adaptations like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the park ride only provides a mere suggestion of storyline and here they have taken it to the extremes. It has given Mr. Johnson the chance to really ham it up and Ms. Blunt an opportunity to be one badass señorita. Their interpersonal relationship is played mostly for laughs.

The storyline revolves around a secret flower pedal that could help save mankind from illness and a curse that has entrapped a group of conquistadors for hundreds of years. It also gives Jesse Plemons the chance to unveil the worst accent ever as the German aristocrat Prince Joachim. Paul Giamatti doesn’t hold back in the bad accent wars as well.

It’s disappointing that after building up Emily Blunt’s character Dr. Lily Houghton as a self-contained, self-confident superwoman they felt the need to couple her up with Johnson’s Captain Frank “Skipper” Wolff in the final scenes. It would have played out so much better if she had kept her independence. That aside Jungle Cruise is a fun bit of escapism that could have entertained and provided a signpost of female self-determination.

As the film’s title suggests, it’s the story of the betrayal and ultimate assassination of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) who was involved in the Black Panther Party in Chicago in the late sixties. Kaluuya whose acting style thus far has been one of reductionism expands his range to include a role filled with anger and indignation. He delivers his words with an unbridled sense of outrage.

At times, the words and emotion are rendered so quickly, it’s hard to understand the actual dialogue, you are oftentimes left with just the feeling that the scene engenders. It keeps you on your toes and never lets you be an impartial and uninvolved viewer. You have to closely follow major and minor details to get the most out of the experience.

Powerful and condemning of the federal government in America in the late sixties, Judas and the Black Messiah show how little advancement the black struggle has made in the decades since. If it is the filmmaker’s intention to spark outrage at this miscarriage of justice and to install a sense of how much needs to change, then they have succeeded spectacularly.
