Dendy Cinemas, the home of quality cinema brings you an unforgettable new outdoor cinema experience at Brisbane Powerhouse, the home of contemporary arts and culture.

DENDY POWERHOUSE OUTDOOR CINEMA is a new and innovative concept from the independent cinema group with traditional cinema locations already cemented into the Brisbane cinema scene at Coorparoo and Portside Wharf. Dendy now invites you to experience a new era in Brisbane entertainment with the first permanent outdoor cinema for the city.

Nothing says you’re in Queensland more than gathering with your friends and family and enjoying the outdoor lifestyle year-round so what better way to mix our love of film and cinema going than with the ultimate outdoor movie experience. No longer do you have to stay inside for your cultural fix.

Dendy Cinemas CEO, Sharon Strickland expressed the collective excitement of this new venture saying, “We are delighted to be partnering with the Brisbane Powerhouse to deliver a stylish and sophisticated, all year round, outdoor cinema experience for the Brisbane community. True to the Dendy brand, Dendy Powerhouse will screen high quality curated content across a wide range of genres, aiming to transport audiences on a journey like never before”.

With such an iconic landmark as Brisbane Powerhouse and set alongside the picturesque New Farm Park and the Brisbane River, it is the perfect backdrop to set the stage for a stylish, comfortable and unique escape into the world of movies.

Brisbane Powerhouse CEO/Artistic Director Kate Gould says, “We’re thrilled to partner with Dendy on this new Outdoor Cinema, a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to showcasing diverse art forms at Brisbane Powerhouse. This cinema will feature Dendy’s impressive film selection alongside our festival programming, offering audiences a range of films, from blockbusters to artistically diverse creations.”

Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema will be showcasing a program of films every Thursday – Sunday evenings catering for movie enthusiasts of all ages with a carefully curated mix of our unique blend of arthouse and mainstream programming.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

In line with this programming strategy, Dendy will look to any opportunity that may present itself – be it arthouse breakouts, marquee blockbusters, concert films, children’s content, theatre productions, as well as restorations and re-releases.

Given that Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema will operate all year-round, the goal will be to maintain a broad but curated program with an emphasis on quality and balance for all that is synonymous with the Dendy brand.

The unique relationship with the Powerhouse team will allow Dendy to coordinate and align with their upcoming programs and exhibitions. Dendy will screen content and events that are both thematically complementary, and contrasting, to upcoming curations and exhibitions to maintain audience engagement in ways that a standard cinema isn’t able to.

Patrons will be fully immersed with a massive outdoor screen atop custom-made 40ft shipping containers and wireless headphones with superior sound quality, whilst reclining back in outdoor lounge chairs with wide armrests. Patrons can order a glass of wine or beer, pair it with a cheese-box or partake in one of Dendy’s classic cinema snacks, including the lovingly hand-scooped choc tops all from the comfort of their seat via a QR code.

Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard says “Dendy Powerhouse is an exciting cultural offering for Brisbane which takes advantage of the city’s beautiful weather and tropical gardens. This cinema under the stars is sure to attract residents and visitors wanting to try an outdoor movie experience.”

Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema opens Friday, November 10 with the highly anticipated film, THE MARVELS followed by the perfect Dendy mix of blockbusters and arthouse with a film line-up including THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLED OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES, DUMB MONEY, THE KILLER, BAD BEHAVIOUR, LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND, THE ROYAL HOTEL and SALTBURN.

Tickets are now available for purchase. See our Summer line-up, session times and book your seats exclusively online at dendy.com.au.

Dendy Powerhouse is supported by Brisbane City Council and Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund, an Australian Government Initiative.

Presented in conjunction with GOMA’s ‘The Motorcycle’ exhibition (28 November 2020 – 26 April 2021), this cinema program explores film depictions of motorcycles from around the world, looking back at more than a century of motorcycles on screen.

Since the early days of the moving image, filmmakers have been drawn to the uniquely cinematic appeal of the motorcycle. The breakneck speed, the unmistakable designs, the ravenously revving engines: motorcycles provide myriad aesthetic possibilities for the screen. Beyond the sound and fury of the bikes themselves, the exoticism of biker gangs and the utilitarian usefulness of motorcycles as common transport offer bases for tales of great danger alongside incisive portraits of life on the ground.

Blending the seminal Hollywood classics that helped define motorcycles in the popular Western imagination with lesser known but equally captivating entries in the film canon, ‘Motorcycles on Screen’ dives into portrayals of the early years of motorcycling, and examines what possibilities may lie ahead of us in the future. It looks at how motorcycles and motorcycle culture have been used in cinema to depict ideas of freedom, danger and fraternity around the world, and how the motorcycle has been used as a potent symbol in experimental filmmaking.

‘Motorcycles on Screen’ is a free, curated cinema program. Seating is general admission and our ushers will ensure all patrons in the cinema follow COVID-safe seating arrangements. As seating is still limited, we recommend arriving early to avoid disappointment.

It’s 1995 and it’s 11-year-old Meera’s first sleepover with best friends Lily and Shaun. Cassette recordings from the radio and Sega Mega Drive distract them from theories about Ashleigh’s disappearance. Outside, on the Great Barrier Reef, police divers are on a search-and-rescue mission by torchlight.

At the crossroads of contemporary performance and cutting-edge technology, Frogman is curious directive’s coming-of-age thriller exploring the fragility of the childhood imagination with audiences experiencing a fictoinal 1995 murder rexamined in 360 degree virtual reality.

A multi-sensory event, presented at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Visy Theatre as part of Brisbane International Film Festival 2018 (BIFF), Frogman submerges the audience deep into the Great Barrier Reef in a sensory-immersive way, inviting audinces to explore the flashback moments via VR.

Frogman performer Georgina Strawson says she’s proud to be part of this collaboration with curious directive, as they strive to tell stories and engage audiences.

“curious directive’s relationship with science, technology and theatre communities alike has allowed us to create a carefully layered and emotionally charged science-led production,” Georgina said.

Fusing live theatre with 360-film and binaural sound, Frogman blurs the lines between reality and fiction, the physical and the virtual. Performed to an intimate audience of 60 people aided by a VR headset, Frogman changes the storytelling norm in a theatre environment. Brisbane Powerhouse Artisitc Director Kris Stewart says that the incorporation of technology is a beautiful fusion of media that will resonate with all ages.

“We really pride ourselves on the fact that Brisbane Powerhouse can be a meeting place for different kinds of creators who are focused on the future of storytelling,” Kris said.

“It’s exciting to be part of BIFF 2018 with a theatre and VR performance that takes the immediacy of photo performance and matches it with cutting-edge 360-degree video that opens up storytelling in a completely new way.”

At once a coming-of-age drama, thriller and pioneering integration of live performance and virtual reality, Frogman will sweep you up in its wake. Brisbane Powerhouse presents Frogman in partnership with BIFF 2018. The production was created by British Theatre company curious directive and is a co-production from curious directive, Hull UK City of Culture 2017, The Deep and The Old Market, in association with Brisbane Powerhouse.

Independent Cinemas Australia (ICA) together with Australian National Theatre Live (ANTLive) has launched a totally new and innovative arts initiative bringing top class Australian Theatre to cinema audiences across the country.

Three productions, filmed in front of live audiences will feature in the first My Cinema Select Spring Season sharing the unique experience of a night at the theatre with independent cinema patrons.

“Today’s Cinemagoers want more than just a film they could view at home, they want a total cinema experience, something new, something different – perhaps something they have never experienced before.” Says Grant Dodwell, co-founder of Australian National Theatre Live. “We provide that experience, transporting you to a front row seat of a filmed live, on-stage theatre production featuring the best Australian playwrights, the best Australian production design and the best Australian performances all captured with the latest audio- visual digital technology. “

“Independent cinemas are focused on increasing audience access to more diverse films and filmed experiences including opera, ballet and theatre. Our recent ACCC authorisation allows us to work more closely with partners like ANTLive to deliver this diversity.” says ICA, CEO Adrianne Pecotic

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

“The iconic Australian theatre productions featured in the Spring Season are rarely offered in regional Australia and are usually sold out in the capital cities. We are delighted to be working with ANTLive and offering a fantastic prize with the Sydney Theatre Company so our audiences don’t miss out and can be the first to experience Australian theatre on the big screen at 23 participating locations.“
The My Cinema Select 2018 Spring Season features 3 very different plays screening from September to November. They all tell distinctly Australian stories, as identifiable as Red Dog, Last Cab to Darwin and any other great Australian story.

THE DAPTO CHASER:
“A whippet smart play, a family saga set in the sub culture of dog racing” – Australian Stage

For the Sinclair family, the cut-throat world of greyhound racing is a religion, and their beloved dog, Boy Named Sue, is more than a greyhound; he’s their heart and soul on four legs. With the crucial Winnebago Classic on the horizon, Cess Sinclair has one shot at reversing his family’s fortunes for good. Against all the odds, he’s betting on a miracle.

STC WHARF REVUE:
“A sharp, incisive satire and deliriously cheap gags” – The Daily Review

Over 15 years and 21 shows, they’ve mercilessly mocked a parade of past and present indignitaries – a who’s who of 21st century embarrassments, from the politicians to the celebrities – all skewered on the stake of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem. It’s the usual suspects, Howard Tampa’s with refugees, Rudd give pennies from Kevin, Gillard refuse to be lectured by “that man”, “that man” scraped the
carbon tax, stopped the boats and – um – got the budget back into surplus… But no one has been able to outplay, outwit or outlast The Wharf Revue.

AWAY:
An epic tale of suburbia replaced with the dark spectacle of a tempest.

It is summer, 1967, and three families head for the coast to get away, to move on, to change. Set against the backdrop of an Australia recovering from the Vietnam War, and wrestling with social upheaval, this production, one of Australia’s greatest classics, pits the internal conflict of family life against the struggle of a country shaping its future. Matthew Lutton’s production of Away unleashes the full theatricality of the pressures of family secrets that eventually swell and gather into a storm.

The season also offers patrons the chance to win a trip to a Sydney Theatre Company 2019 production with 2 night’s accommodation and dinner for two valued up to $4,600:
• Return economy direct flights to Sydney
• Return airport/hotel transfers and Sydney ground transport [to maximum value of $300]
• 2 nights twin shared four-star hotel accommodation including breakfast in central Sydney
• 2 tickets to a STC play of your choice in the 2019 Season [subject to availability]
• Dinner for two to the value of $350

There is also a Minor Prize of a STC Wharf Revue Blu-ray and STC Wharf Revue Cinema Poster valued at $35.00 to be given away at each participating My Cinema location.

Patrons enter by purchasing a ticket to see ANTLive: THE DAPTO CHASER from 1 September, and/or STC WHARF REVUE in September or October and/or AWAY from 15 November 2018 at participating My Cinema locations and filling in an online entry form.

The competition opens 31 August 2018 and closes 30 November 2018. The promotion terms and conditions, participating cinemas and permit numbers are detailed on www.mycinema.com.au.

“At ANT Live we are passionate about creating more places for theatre – overcoming the barriers of location, affordability and accessibility so that anyone can enjoy this modern yet ancient art form. We thank ICA and their My Cinema platform for this opportunity.” Said Dodwell.
